Eri Yamamoto Cobalt Blue CD (2006)
Footprints: The Life And Music Of Wayne Shorter buy CD music Eri Yamamoto is a young Japanese pianist who possesses all the tools necessary for greatness: a keen sense of time, a swinging voice, technical chops that anybody would admire, and a singer's lyric sensibility as a soloist. Cobalt Blue is her debut for Thirsty Ear in the Blue Series -- curated by her friend, vanguard jazz pianist Matthew Shipp -- and her fourth outing overall. Along with bassist David Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi, she weaves a tapestry that reveals her influences, pianist McCoy Tyner, in particular, and Horace Tapscott and Bill Evans to a lesser extent. A lot of Yamamoto's own compositions are built upon chord structures that never resolve themselves despite their ascendant and descendant patterns: "Melodica Chops," which opens the album, and the title track are cases in point. They are reaching, creating and relaxing tension without ever opening onto new territory. That's not really even a criticism, just a way of hearing; Tyner has done much of the same thing, especially when he was with the John Coltrane's Quartet. "Hot Coffee" is a showcase for Ambrosio, who clearly drives the track, but it is Yamamoto's percussive voicings and her knotty arpeggios that which give the tune something besides kinetic drive. Her lyric sensibility is as restrained and economical as a painter's tentative, precise brush strokes; they are everywhere evident in "Irving Place" and the closer "The Quiet of the Night." The two cover tunes here feel more like material to fill out an album rather than typically inspiring it. Whether it's Cole Porter's "I Love You" that feels like it drags a bit, or "They Can't Take That Away from Me," which is a bit over-florid perhaps, but then her way of hearing what's in these pieces just may be very different from the norm. In all this there is a brave little trio record from an artist who is surely in touch with her own strengths and understands implicitly (and employs it often) the only real tension that matters, that between melodic improvisation and harmonic construction. Highly recommended. ~ Thom Jurek

Crowded House Classic Masters CD (2003) Top Seller
Footprints: The Life And Music Of Wayne Shorter songs By their very nature, compilations omit songs -- they're designed to distill an artist's body of work to ten or 12 songs, so it's only natural that critics and fans alike will complain about what tracks were left behind, particularly for a band like Crowded House, which had a limited number of charting hits, lots of released singles, and a passionate fan base that made album tracks seem like hits. This 12-track collection has four of the big hits ("Don't Dream It's Over," "Weather with You," "Something So Strong," "It's Only Natural"), but the remaining eight songs are a weird mix of lesser-known singles, solid album tracks, and relative rarities -- a remix of "Distant Sun" and previously unreleased (at least in the U.S.) live versions of "When You Come" and "Sister Madly." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Includes liner notes by Bill DeYoung.
This is part of Capitol Records "Classic Masters" series.
Producers: Mitchell Froom, Neil Finn, Youth.
Audio Remasterer: Robert Vosgien.
Crowded House: Neil Finn (vocals); Tim Finn, Mark Hart, Nick Seymour,

Linn Barnes and Allison Hampton Fantasies & Inventions CD (2010)
Footprints: The Life And Music Of Wayne Shorter buy CD music The eleven compositions in this collection reflect themes from the Virginia countryside. The deep woods surrounding us are a constant and wondrous mirror allowing close contact with the many varieties of sylvan life. In many ways these pieces are a kind of back porch reflection of this ancient land.
We delight in considering the animals, fields and forest which surround us and seek to bring them to musical life with instruments and themes from the many sources which represent our collective musical backgrounds.

Skandalon Cause & Cure CD (2007)
Footprints: The Life And Music Of Wayne Shorter songs Cause + Cure, released in 2004, was Skandalon's first full-length project and a collaboration between founder Jeff Timpanaro and musician/producer Mark Townsend. With notable influences of industrial stalwarts Delerium and Skinny Puppy, Cause + Cure journeys through three distinct movements (all sans vocals). Tracks 1-5 feature exemplary industrial beats & grooves, while tracks 6-9 tour a more ambient structure. Blips, atmospheres, and fuzzy synth leads take you into the cavernous haze that is track 10 (Man Of Sorrows), an eleven minute hypnotic experience of desperation, beauty, and hope.
Cause + Cure is not your father's electronica. Most appropriately labeled as the "best practices" of the industrial/electronic music of the late 80s and early 90s, this work is presented in a post-modern context using current technology. JT's influences from this period are found throughout Cause + Cure. Townsend's contributions are also unmistakable not only in the programming, but in the eye-popping production and aural dynamic of the project. Note the killer wave manipulation in "Flakc" and "No One", the driving bass lines in "Levitationation" and "Help You Hurt Somebody", and the melodies and solos of "Xoire".

Stars Salute George Gershwin CD (1999)
Footprints: The Life And Music Of Wayne Shorter album for sale This bare-bones British compilation (probably a budget item at home) pulls together 20 recordings of Gershwin tunes, a few of which pair appropriate performers to songs: Fred Astaire (with Ginger Rogers) introduced "Shall We Dance" and "They All Laughed" in the 1937 film Shall We Dance (despite the nonexistent annotations, the included versions are doubtless his Brunswick studio recordings), Judy Garland sang "But Not for Me" and "Embraceable You" in Girl Crazy in 1943 (these are Decca studio recordings), Al Jolson made "Swanee" into a hit, as Billie Holiday did with "Summertime," and Doris Day sang "'S Wonderful" in Starlift (1951). Even without such connections, the performers do, as the sleeve note crows, represent "an awesome selection of American talent, " especially jazz talent: Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman with Helen Forrest, Peggy Lee, Carmen McRae, Artie Shaw, Fats Waller, Chick Webb, and Lee Wiley. It's isn't so clear that Buddy Lee ("Fascinating Rhythm") and Cyril Grantham with Geraldo & His Orchestra ("A Foggy Day") represent talent that is necessarily awesome or American, but in general the selection is good. ~ William Ruhlmann
Performers include: Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Al Jolson, Carmen McCrae, Billie Holiday, Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Lee Wiley, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller & His Orchestra, Benny Carter & His Orchestra, Artie Shaw & His Orchestra, Helen Forrest, The Benny Goodman Orchestra, Chick Webb & His Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra.
