(13 Customer Reviews)
The Kings of the Beats serves its purpose well, to showcase the production mastery of Luny Tunes. The two-disc, 43-track album rounds up instrumental versions of many of the duo's most popular work, along with other production shorts exclusive to this album. The Kings of the Beats isn't recommended to casual or curious reggaeton listeners, given its purely instrumental, sampler-like quality. However, if you're a reggaeton fanatic or a beat head looking to delve deeply into the inner workings of Luny Tunes, here you go: enjoy. ~ Jason Birchmeier

| | Lullabies For A Small World CD (2003)
Kings Of The The Beats music CDs
$14.69 Ellipsis Arts' Lullabies for a Small World collects 14 bedtime songs from all over the globe sung in their native tongues, including the lovely Brazilian lullaby "Flor E Estrela" sung by Teresa Ines and the ethereally beautiful "Fais Dodo," a French classic sung by Alexandra Montano. For the most part, a great deal of care has been put into these performances to guarantee their authenticity, although the synth pads on the Italian lullaby "Ninna Nanna Ri La Rossi" give it more of a new age-y cast than expected. Still, the album is a pretty -- and pretty diverse -- collection, spanning the slightly jazzy cast that the Nikolaj Hess Trio brings to the Danish lullaby "Stille, Hjerte, Sol Gaar Ned," Bernardo Palombo's traditional, acoustic rendition of Mexico's "Maya Luz," and Marylou Seba's sprightly yet soft version of Cameroon's "Mba Mon." David Darling's "Lullaby for Erin" is the American contribution to this collection, and as lovely as it is, it would have been nice to include some more traditional American lullabies on the album. Nevertheless, ...
| | Amplified Heat In For Sin CD (2004)
Kings Of The The Beats songs
$9.35 An amped-up garage rock trio with some blues, metal, and rockabilly influences, Amplified Heat debuts with the seriously overdriven In for Sin. Three brothers from Houston led by singer-guitarist Jim Ortiz, Amplified Heat isn't part of the fashion-conscious brigade of perfectly mussed rocker boys, having more in common with Memphis rockabilly-blues legends Tav Falco's Panther Burns or even the Reverend Horton Heat's psychobilly twang. Jim Ortiz's sore-throat growl of a voice delivers frankly lascivious cars-and-girls lyrics over distorted guitars, Gian Ortiz's fuzz-tone basslines, and Chris Ortiz's acrobatic, perfectly overplayed drums, turning slow and bluesy for the extended guitar workout "Just a Junkie" and going for Kiss-style '70s metal on "Fever," but most of the album consists of wild-eyed, punky rockers like "Roadrunner" and the title track. ~ Stewart Mason
'My Place' is the second of Wally Lawder's 3 CDs, recorded in 2004 shortly after he moved to New Mexico. "In some ways, I see this as a complement to the Back to the Adobe Cafe CD. This is the mellower side of the two." Using his acoustic folk-pop style, this album moves from an almost folk feel to a soft jazzy pop. A good collection to settle into with a glass of wine after a day on the road or after work. Bio:Wally Lawder is a Kansan-born New Englander who now lives in Silver City, New Mexico. A talented singer-songwriter with a loyal following, he likes to think of himself as a contemporary troubador. "It's hard for me to categorize my music--I've had so many far ranging influences. My roots are as much in rock/pop as folk, and I've got a big appreciation for jazz and world music." A musician for many years, he didn't start writing his own material until the mid 1990's, when he found himself energized by the contemporary singer-songwriter boom. "I really took a liking to performers like John Gorka, Ellis Paul, Patty Larkin, ...
