On their self-titled debut, Glasgow foursome Franz Ferdinand lift the jagged, danceable sounds of British post-punk to elegant and dizzying new heights. While they may seem to have much in common with the wave of American bands emerging in the early 2000s, Franz Ferdinand demonstrates a close study of the genre and proves its prowess. If the Rapture is a rowdy kegger in a Brooklyn loft, then Franz Ferdinand is a gin-soaked dance-off at an outdoor European cafe where no table remains untipped. As disciples of the Fire Engines, Josef K, and Orange Juice, chief songwriters Alex Kapranos and Nicholas McCarthy temper the edges with a sense of melody that wisely falls just shy of Blondie-style bubble gum.
The centerpiece is "Take Me Out" (a U.K. top ten hit), which plays out a series of come-ons between rival assassins, over what begins as a sneering slice of mid-1990s Britpop, only to morph into a funky dance-floor tune. Kapranos is often quoted as saying that the band was started in order to "make music that girls can dance to," but this unusually assured debut is quite likely to affect discriminating boys in exactly the same way.
This limited special edition contains a bonus disc featuring B-sides and rarities.

It has become addictive to listen to - only one song doesn't connect - "van tango" on the bonus CD. Otherwise, from "take me out" to "the dark of the matinee" to "michael" to "words so leisured" deomonstrate a range of extraordinary talent. Very cool. Buy the CD. The best thing to come out of scotland since bagpipes!!! I got this album a year ago...but it still rocks my socks off!!! I originally got it because I heard blips of the song "Take Me Out" and I thought it was an awesome song, but I started to listen to the other songs, and I was amazed at how good the other songs were! Also, it only happends once in a blue moon that you find an album that is so good, that you can put it in your cd player, press play, and listen to it from start to finish!!! I am SOOO glad I got this album, and I hope you will be, too (assuming of course, that you do buy it). Submitted by DragnSly (Haslett, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I got this months ago and still listen to it daily. And that's coming from a heavy metal fan who rarely, if evers, listens to anything else. Take me out, cheating on you, and This fire are especially good. But none the less all of these are excellent and I would recommend them to anyone. Franz Ferdinand album
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination of Smith's internal angst and his melodic pop constructions makes for a compelling artistic tension.

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Franz Ferdinand CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a ...

Franz Ferdinand music CDs
$15.49 COME AWAY WITH ME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).
"Don't Know Why" won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Arif Mardin won the 2003 Grammy Award for Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical).
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazz singer. One thing that separates her from the pack is Ms. Jones' own piano stylings--not flashy, but deftly doubling or echoing her voice--that discreetly act as the glue holding together these airy, delicate, and beautiful arrangements.
But the centerpiece is certainly the 22-year-old's confident-beyond-her-years vocal delivery in addition to a precise diction and velvety tone. Shades of Nina Simone, vintage Phoebe ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Franz Ferdinand songs
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, ...
| | Elliott Smith From A Basement On The Hill CD (2004)
Franz Ferdinand album
$15.25 Elliott Smith's death in 2003 left a cavernous hole in the world of popular music. Tender, intimate, and painfully honest, the songs in Smith's catalogue capture the fragility of human existence with rare, breathtaking beauty. On his first posthumous release, Smith reaffirms his status as an extraordinarily gifted artist, giving fans yet another reason to mourn his tragic loss.
Conceived as an ambitious double album, FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL was ultimately narrowed down to 15 tracks by Smith's close friends, producer Rob Schnapf (Beck's MELLOW GOLD, Smith's X/O) and musician Joanna Bolme (the Minders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks). The result is a heartbreaking collection of songs that plays like a retrospective of Smith's entire career. "Strung Out Again" reflects the early edge of ROMAN CANDLE; "Last Hour" recalls the bittersweet melodies of ELLIOTT SMITH; "A Fond Farewell" ...

Franz Ferdinand songs
$10.19 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
There's no denying that Devo was one of the greatest live bands to emerge from the "new wave era," as their quirky sense of humor translated perfectly to the stage, with a variety of props, costumes, and projection screens. For visual proof once and for all, all you have to do is check out the 2005 CD/DVD dual disc Live 1980. Recorded at a show at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA (just before "Whip It" and Freedom of Choice raced up the charts), this complete-set, pro-shot performance features surprisingly strong sound and picture -- something that bootleg collectors will agree is becoming increasingly hard to find from the pre-MTV era. This is the Devo period right before they became perhaps a bit too obsessed with electronics (1982's Oh, No! It's Devo, 1984's Shout, etc.), as the quintet appears to be at its in-concert peak throughout. With only three albums of material to choose from at this point, there are quite a few interesting tracks that will be of interest to hardcore fans: "S.I.B. (Swelling Itching Brain)," "Secret Agent Man," "Be Stiff." That said, all the pre-1981 Devo classics are here as well: "Whip It," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Freedom of Choice," "Jocko Homo," "Smart Patrol/Mr. ...

Franz Ferdinand album
$18.99 "Heartache On The Run, Toni Catlin's debut album is loaded with great songs, lots of heart, and great promise." - Al Cafaro - Former President of A&M Records"Toni Catlin is one of the most exciting female artists to emerge this year." -Billy Block - Host of Western Beat on CMTToni Catlin's debut release Heartache On The Run positions this singer/songwriter for international acclaim. The lonesome cry in her voice is both delicate and powerful with an honesty that engages the listener from the onset.Catlin began performing covers of Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstadt and the Eagles at her family's Adirondack resort. She then perfected her talent for singing and playing the guitar at St. Lawrence University and the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria. After traveling through Europe and Central America Toni settled in Telluride, Colorado where she worked for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Here Toni began to embrace her own musical style by performing regularly in the Rockies ski towns. After an intensive vocal studies program at the Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, Catlin took the advice of many noted songwriters appearing at Telluride and moved to Nashville. It didn't take Toni long to establish herself as a quality songwriter in the city where the competition is fierce. She has had songs published by several notable companies such as Curb Music and Big Fish Entertainment. Now Toni has teamed with producer Preston Sullivan to create her debut release Heartache On The Run, a freshly melodic pairing of sensual rhythms and heart-wrenching vocals. A superbly complimentary ...
