Golden Thread album
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many ...

| | Gerry Mulligan Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series Vol. 9: Zurich 1962 CD (1998)
Golden Thread music CDs
$11.85 Gerry Mulligan/Gerry Mulligan Quartet: Gerry Mulligan; Bill Crow (bass guitar); Gus Johnson, Bob Brookmeyer.
This 1962 concert by the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, recorded for broadcast by Swiss Radio, was finally released commercially by TCB in 1998. With frequent collaborator Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, bassist Bill Crow, and drummer Gus Johnson, the set primarily consists of still-fresh originals by Mulligan, as well as Brookmeyer's cooking "Open Country," a staple of Mulligan's various groups, and the lush standard "Darn That Dream." Mulligan's ballad "Love in New Orleans," long workouts of "Subterranean Blues" (with Brookmeyer switching to piano), and the playful "Spring Is Sprung" (with Mulligan on piano, and also featuring solos by Crow and Johnson), as well as Art Farmer's "Blueport," are also among the CDs high points. The interplay between Mulligan's matchless baritone sax and Brookmeyer's cool trombone is comparable to the musical ESP between Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. Mulligan fans will definitely want to add this highly recommended disc to their collections. ~ Ken Dryden
The early '60s were a very productive time for Gerry Mulligan, not only because of his impressive Concert Jazz Band, but also, because of various small groups that he led. One of those small groups can be heard on Zurich 1962, which finds the baritone saxophonist leading a cohesive quartet that includes Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Bill Crow on acoustic ...
| | Saskia Laroo Sunset Eyes 2000 CD (1999)
Golden Thread songs
$13.85 In 1999, Dutch trumpeter Saskia Laroo traveled to Los Angeles, where she joined forces with tenor sax great Teddy Edwards and recorded her fourth album, Sunset Eyes 2000. Any album that prominently features Edwards (who she co-led the session with) is at least noteworthy, and to be sure, the tenor veteran is in good to excellent form on this hard bop date. Laroo's previous straight-ahead album, Jazzkia, was essentially a tribute to Miles Davis--one in which her love of Davis' legacy was so strong that it drowned out any individuality. Laroo doesn't sound distinctive on Sunset Eyes 2000 either, but even so, her solos on this album are likable and competent. Recalling Miles Davis in the 1940s and 1950s, Laroo is a very lyrical player, and Edwards can certainly be quite lyrical and melodic himself. But while Edwards favors a big, fat tone and swings hard and passionately, Laroo is much more subtle, restrained and economical (as was Davis). Edwards' confident, focused ...
