| | Three Days Grace Life Starts Now CD (2009)
We, Ourselves & Us music CDs
$13.59 The third studio album from Canadian arena rockers Three Days Grace treads familiar ground, presenting 12 slabs of the kind of reliable, accessible, and serviceable hard rock that will always have an audience. 2006's ONE-X dealt heavily with vocalist Adam Gontier's personal demons, a theme that continues on LIFE STARTS NOW, albeit with a hint of sunlight. With a sound that lands somewhere in ...
| | Metallica Death Magnetic CD (2008)
We, Ourselves & Us songs
$15.65 In the five years between the two releases, Metallica seem to have gotten back in touch with the raw power of their classic period, with a little help from legendary producer Rick Rubin. One listen to the 10-minute epic "Suicide & Redemption" with its mix of raw rock ferocity and complex musical development should tell you the old Metallica's back in business. Long tracks with complex structures and intricate, speedy riffs abound. Most appealing for longtime fans may be the return to the frenzied guitar solos of yore. Rubin seems to have assisted the ...
| | Slayer Reign In Blood CD (1986)
We, Ourselves & Us album
$9.59 Slayer's major-label debut remains one of the most brutal metal albums ever recorded, uncompromising in its extremes; ironically, it's their mainstream breakthrough release. Infusing its thrash sound with a hardcore-punk influence, the cacophonous quartet shifts from supernatural terror to real-life horrors with shorter songs such as "Necrophobic" and "Postmortem". The change is most notable on the gruesome depiction of Nazi butcher Josef ...
| | Wishbone Ash Argus CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
We, Ourselves & Us CD music
$6.49 On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn't mess with its formula--as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band's previous efforts, and the harmony singing ...
| | M O D Loved By Thousands...Hated By Millions...Greatest Hits Volume One CD (1995)
We, Ourselves & Us music CDs
$9.79 Loved by Thousands, Hated by Millions might have represented the M.O.D. self-concept at the time of this 1995 compilation, but the description probably isn't exactly accurate. Most within the metal community had simply forgotten about this band (or more importantly, the superior project, S.O.D., that the group was born out of). In any event, after five Megaforce efforts stuffed with Billy Milano's failed attempt at humor and myopic, nationalist, and even jingoistic rants disguised as jokes, it was time for a best-of collection despite the absence of any hits. Anthems like "Spandex Enormity" and "Clubbin' Seals" probably had them rolling in the New York-area mosh pits, as live support must have been the leading criteria for inclusion in this 29-song opus. There are a couple of nice moments on Loved by Thousands, Hated by Millions -- especially from those culled from M.O.D.'s debut. But this record can be no stronger than the band's catalog, ...

| | Burzum Daudi Baldrs CD (1997)
We, Ourselves & Us music CDs
$13.89 America's Dead Ringer has begun to reissue the Burzum catalogue, making it available for the first time in the U.S. While the package here is quite nice, none of the inside text has been translated into English. As for the music, the fifth album by Varg Vikernes' musical alter ego Burzum, Daudi Baldrs, is a continuation on the ideas first expressed with great success on Filosofem, but done completely digitally from keyboards. Vikernes has abandoned the entire musical idea of black metal here and, as on the aforementioned recording (from which he recycles certain modes and themes), he is attempting to create a new folk and classical music that explores his rather insane and misanthropic notions of society and (anti)culture. Vikernes is in prison for the murder of a former friend and has become an avowed Nazi who claims that his paganism (the worship of Odin) is the inspiration of his racist, anti-Judeo/Christian views. That said, his music cannot be dismissed merely as the ...

| | Richard Franklin (Could Be) Live (But Isn't) CD (2008)
We, Ourselves & Us album
$16.45 Nowadays, most recordings are created in small studios using computers to both record and generate the music. This has freed us from the tyranny of the big music companies that care only about profits and little about art.It has allowed incredible musicians of limited means all over the world to share their talents with us and give us -- as consumers -- access to a variety of music that just a few years ago would have been unimaginable. However, the explosion of digital music has had one negative consequence. That is the reduction of opportunities for the live and spontaneously created music that occurs only when real people get together to perform. There are many other factors contributing to the decline of live music, to be sure, but the ease with which one can create layer upon layer of synthesized, overdubbed, corrected tracks has resulted in a certain sterility in many recordings.I have been as guilty of this as anyone. All of the CDs that I have released over the years have been produced in this way -- one track at a time, using the computer to play most of the tracks (even those I could have played myself). With this album I was determined to create as *live* a feeling as I could. To start with, all of the cuts feature a strict quartet format: guitar, bass, keys, drums. There is no layering of numerous keys, strings, or brass. All of these arrangements could be played live *exactly* as they are recorded here. Of course ...
