$7.99 | | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Best Of Clementine
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy in practice. These choral chants hamper the hardest rocking songs here -- "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," ...

$17.45 Produced in conjunction with the BBC television documentary of the same name, The Magic of Motown is yet another overview of the legendary label's golden age, and while there are dozens (if not hundreds) of similar compilations already on the market, this one deserves at least a second look if only because its British origins result in a slightly more unique and far-ranging ...

| | Watersons For Pence And Spicy Ale CD (1975) (Import) United Kingdom
Best Of Clementine
$14.55 FOR PENCE AND SPICY ALE contains songs from a 1975 LP and material recorded by individual band members in 1977.
Recorded in March 1975 & January 1977. Includes liner notes by A.L. Lloyd and Tony Engle.
For hardcore British-folk fans, the Watersons were the Beatles of the U.K. folk revival of the 1960s, standing head and shoulders above their peers and influencing legions of followers. FOR PENCE AND SPICY ALE (1975) was the first album by a revitalized and reconfigured version of the group, with Norma Waterson's husband, Martin Carthy, replacing her cousin, John Harrison. On a batch of traditional folk songs, the group's four-part a cappella harmonies are like moving sculptures, the voices weaving through and around each other in striking formulations. FOR PENCE AND SPICY ALE signaled a new beginning for the Watersons and reiterated their status as folk standard-bearers.
Long overdue for remastering and reissue, this classic album of British folk music sounds as fresh and astringently beautiful today as it did in 1975 when it was originally released. For Pence and Spicy Ale marked the Watersons' return to both stage and studio following a hugely successful career in the mid-'60s and then a hiatus of several years. The Watersons (who by this point included Martin Carthy in place of original member John Harrison) sound -- if anything -- stronger, and their voices blend even more richly than on their previous releases. "Creamy" is not the word you'd use to describe the quartet's sound; instead, it's reedy and almost vinegary, with a preponderance ...
