On Divina Lluz (Divine Light), Mus searches for something more organic in origin, leaving behind the soothing combination of trip-hop and ambient pop that created a dreamy atmosphere on its debut, Fai. The Spanish duo (Fran Gayo and Monica Vacas) instead drape their somber pieces in piano, guitar, and bass. With Vacas' soft vocals (sung in Asturian, a language spoken in northwest Spain) remaining as the one constant for Mus, the shift in instrumentation doesn't effect the mood too much. Vacas gives Divina Lluz a sensual appeal, like she's singing in a darkly lit lounge in a David Lynch film. The lyrics, however, reveal that the songs are actually quite dreary. "I began to walk with a shard of glass wedged in my soul," she sings in "Escuela Cruda" ("Crude School") and "always alone, I always find myself bored/crying my entire life under a green olive tree" in "Sola" ("Alone"). It's depressing, yes, but fortunately few listeners will understand the language and just be comforted by her voice. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. After years spent in the wilderness of the Big Apple's financial sector, the siren call of "Show Business" could no longer be ignored, and anti-folk hero Block was finally tempted back into the studio, resulting in the enthralling The Last Single Guy album. And let's begin with "Show Business," the Irving Berlin classic that Ethel Merman definitively made her own. Block totally revamps it, vamp being the operative word, for he transforms it into a slinky, smoky, '40s-styled jazz number, you can almost see the tall blonde in stiletto heels and a too-tight red dress swiveling her hips at his side. Traditional Dublin lass "Molly Malone" gets an equally startling make-over that sweeps her off her tired feet and off to Hollywood, streaking through rock and psychedelia along the way. But that's the beauty of this set, no song is quite what it seems.
