The Troll's sole album is extremely diverse late-'60s psychedelia. It's one of those records you can play over and over again without getting a grip on what exactly the group identity is. For many bands, such a description might be interpreted as a major compliment. The thing is, though, it's not a record you want to play over and over again, because the material isn't that good, and the eclecticism is not so much admirable versatility as contrived freakiness. At various times they sniff around hard rock, fruity pop-psychedelia, arch vaudevillian good-time music ("Professor Pott's Pornographic Projector" and "Have You Seen the Queen?"), and slightly bittersweet folk-rock-flavored pop-psych. The influences of Beatlesque melody and vocal harmonies are strongly felt at times, and there are some periodic interjections of the kind of varispeed vocals and odd effects that major labels only tolerated for a few years or so around the late '60s. There are glints of appealing fairytale aura pop-psychedelia here and there, as on "A Winter's Song," with its pseudo-British orchestration. Overall, it's an unmemorable mish-mash, however, and the far-out jollity and menace it seems to often aim for is more forced than inspired. ~ Richie Unterberger

Animated Music album
$15.09 Ken Russell's adaptation of the Who's rock opera Tommy has always been greeted with skepticism, and years after its controversial release, it remains a polarizing experience, due to its sheer garishness (no big surprise from Russell) and its bevy of guest stars. These two traits, unsurprisingly, spill over to the soundtrack, which is hardly just a re-recording of the Who album -- it's a reinvention of the album, padded with elaborate production twists until it's ready to burst. This, of course, means it's more musical than rock & roll, which sort of fits this project. Elton John's spirited rendition of "Pinball Wizard" (the man was at the top of his game in 1975, after all) and maybe Tina Turner's "Acid Queen" give this spark. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Timothy B Schmit Playin' It Cool CD (1984)
Animated Music CD music
$9.69 After noted tenures in supergroup the Eagles and equally super (but not as supergroup-ish) Poco, Schmit took a cue from his former bandmantes Don Henley and Glenn Frey and took a stab at a solo career with Playin' It Cool. Not as gifted a songwriter as Henley or Frey, Schmit holds his own in the vocal department and the musicianship is on par with either of his colleauges. But what makes Playin' It Cool sound subpar is the erratic nature of the tracks. The production on several of these tunes sound antiquated in comparison to the super glossed production of the mid eighties; almost reminiscent of Schmit's tunes in the Eagles. It certainly doesn't help matters that many of his Southern California compadres (Henley, Carl Wilson, Joe Walsh and JD Souther) make guest appearances, leading to the notion that Playin' It Cool is an album that was several years in the making. It's not the worst of Eagles solo records, ...

$12.79 This is not a true greatest hits, but a collection of newly remixed (1987) versions of her hits.
Madonna's meteoric rise to stardom had as its springboard the early '80s NY club scene; dance music has provided a home base for any of the musical journeys her widely varied career has seen her take. 1987's YOU CAN DANCE found the reigning queen of pop revisiting some of her more famous works, courtesy of the mixing skills of some of the friends she'd made along the way, notably NY DJ and mix artist Jellybean Benitez (a name which was inseparable ...
