The second and final album by Wisconsin punk trio the Kill-A-Watts -- they broke up as the album was being released -- comes complete with a title and graphics straight out of the early-'80s new wave. However, the album shows little of the same influence; it's completely straightforward three-chord punk-pop with alternating male/female vocals, basically indistinguishable from hordes of similar albums that worship at the altar of the Ramones. Though individual songs are pleasant enough in a deliberately amateurish D.I.Y. fashion, the 13 brief tracks (each averaging around 90 seconds) blur together in a rush of adrenaline tempos and yelping vocals, with little to differentiate them from one another. This reissue of the pioneering British progressive blues band's classic early-1970s live album contains five bonus tracks.
Following Paul Rodgers' unsuccessful project titled Peace and Andy Fraser's ill-fated Toby, Free rebuilt themselves and released Free at Last in the summer of 1972. The band went right back to what they know best, with Rodgers bearing his blues-rock soul to Kossof's moody electric guitar. Tracks like "Sail On," "Soldier Boy," and "Travelling Man" come out on top as some of the band's most emotive material, proving that their breakup in 1971 had no real effect on their chemistry. LEMON LOVE, the 2005 debut by singer/songwriter Aslyn, is an impressive 12-track collection that blends Beatlesque melodies, soulful R&B stylings, and tough-minded confessionalism (a la Alanis Morissette). From beginning to end, the album sounds so meticulously crafted that it's hard to believe this is the artist's first outing. Top-notch production from Guy Chambers, Richard Flack, and Eric Valentine gives the instruments and vocals a sparkling, richly layered sound that makes nearly every track feel tailor-made for Top 40 radio.
But it is Aslyn's songs themselves that really carry the album. Honest and vulnerable, yet infused with passionate conviction, her tunes resemble short stories packed with detailed slices of life and meditations on love found and lost. Musically, too, the artist mixes it up. "Just Enough," the record's opener, rides a languid groove in the verse before shifting to a memorable chorus. "493-1023," a stirring, piano-driven ballad about the singer's painful childhood, segues into the positive, Stevie Wonder-inspired vibe of "Ain't No Love." "Wally," a narrative about Aslyn's grandparents' marriage, and "Be the Girl," a slinky rocker about self-definition, are two other highlights on this dynamic album.
The back of Aslyn's Lemon Love depicts her gazing at her own record on 12" vinyl, complete with Capitol's famous rainbow label. It's a fun little fantasy, fitting with the stars, cloud doodles, and vintage headphones ...

....Anthony O'Mally and the Revolution ... happened when Anthony O'Mally, worn out and beat, fresh from the Emerald Isle, playing at the Roisin Dubh in Galway, ripe with the Irish Mist ...and a few (albums worth) new songs ...got mixed up with some f............. good underground Australian muso's in Port Fairy Vic on a wee trip down under sippin some coffee's ....and eatin Jordy's Port style "scrambled on toast ..." at J.D.s. It was Chris Hedges on wicked bass guitar, Jordan Lockett on drums and Dave Macmillan on Pushy People, double bass so we gigged at the local pub, the Royal Oak and went in to the Studio of Tony Peel's, Motherlode in Warrnambool for about 5 months ...and and an occassional beer later ...she was was born. Almost. Off to New Zealand for more blazing fiddles, Scottish Pipe, and crooked fine music. Of course that's the short version. In New Zealand, the like's of Mo Moen's drums, Grant Shearer of Glasgow on Irish Pipe, Nick Swan on Mando and Banjoe, Andy Kerr on harmonica (all of the stomping Wellington Irish Rocker Band, Jackie Tar, friends of Anthony's from 4 years earlier) Of course, The Poetry of Peter Lacy who wrote the lyrics for the Mersey, big hearted Urson Ergul from Turkey, fresh from an extended tour with his Band around Europe on smoldering lead guitar, (he's a Pisces), Warren Maxwell (Award winning Performer from the Year earlier in New Zealand in 2002 of Trinity Roots) on savifying Sax ...and Kerry Wood flying on soulfull fiddle .... Whew ...something like that. Of course Matt Newdick "doing it" on bass on the Mersey and Little Piece of mind as well ...right ...
