| | Don Cherry Mu First Part / Mu Second Part CD (2001) Reissue; Remastered
Theremin: Russia With Love CD music
$10.65 An outstanding work in the free jazz and avant-garde jazz idiom, the Mu sessions are among the most beautiful improvised duets recorded during the height of the free jazz movement. Recorded in France in 1969 and originally released on the BYG Actuel imprint, Mu remained an obscure collector's item for three decades until its reissue in two parts during the '90s. With Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, Indian flute, bamboo flute, voice, bells, and percussion and Ed Blackwell on drums, percussion, and bells, the pair created one of the most telepathic improvisations on record, matched only by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali on the album Interstellar Space. From simple playful themes, ...

| | Thelonious Monk Mulligan Meets Monk CD (1957) (Import)
Theremin: Russia With Love music CDs
$29.59 Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
Originally released on Riverside (1106). Includes liner notes by Orrin
Digitally remastered using 20-bit K2 Super Coding System technology.
MULLIGAN MEETS MONK documents the 1957 meeting of two sharp musical minds. Though the pairing may seem unlikely, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan--whose cool, West Coast style blends dexterity with laid-back grace--and Thelonious Monk--whose radical, angular piano playing and thoroughly modern compositions are blueprints for the possibilities of bop--sound remarkable together. In fact, it is the contrast between the players' styles that lends this set its balance and appeal.
The program, which includes four compositions by Monk and one by Mulligan, is unassailable. Mulligan acquits himself admirably on the Monk classics "'Round Midnight," "Rhythm-a-ning" and "Straight, No Chaser," unfurling his smooth tone over their zigzagging melodies ...

As with any prolific jazz artist, no one album from Thelonious Monk's career could provide a definitive introduction to his music. And unlike Miles Davis or John Coltrane, Monk's development did not take place in epochal leaps defined by this or that particular LP. Rather, Monk's art unfolded through a continued probing of a relatively small collection of compositions. MONK'S GREATEST HITS contains nothing that ever had a prayer of heavy rotation on FM radio, but rather nine of the tunes that Monk spent his career exploring, all of ...

| | Blood of the Sun In Blood We Rock CD (2009)
Theremin: Russia With Love CD music
$9.75 Formed in 2002 by ex Archie Bunker members Henry Vasquez (drums) and Dave Gryder (organ/electric piano). The band quickly established itself as a formidable live act with the addition of ex Las Cruces vocalist Mark Zammaron. 2004 saw the self titled debut CD released through Brainticket Records garnering critical acclaim for its fresh approach to classic heavy 70's rock. Drawing on inspiration from classic heavy bands like Deep Purple, Grand Funk and Humble Pie, the band continued to spread their heavy rock sound in the heat soaked regions of Texas! In 2005 their sophomore effort "In Blood We Rock" saw the vocal duties being taken over by drummer Vasquez. More rocking and intense than the debut, these songs translated into a wild storm of hard rock mayhem on the live front with Vasquez pulling double duty on vex and drums. Shortly after the band embarked on their first European tour with Versus the Stillborn Minded and Spancer as support. A year later the band was to hit the main stage as a co-headlining act at the infamous Roadburn festival in Holland. ...
