Purr-Fect Melodies album
$8.69 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
The Dire Straits' mastermind's first non-soundtrack solo album is a refreshingly diverse outing. Mellower overall than his previous fare, there's still plenty of stunning guitar work and solid songcrafting to be had here. The songs cover a lot of stylistic bases, from rock to folk, Celtic, blues and somber balladeering. The disc is full, yet its diversity never becomes superfluous. A well-planned and pleasing slice of craftsmanship from one of rock's reigning originals.
Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee; London, England; Dublin, Ireland.

| | Windham Hill Christmas CD (2002)
Purr-Fect Melodies CD music
$6.09 While they may not be everyone's cup of herbal tea, the pioneering New Age label Windham Hill could never be accused of being anything less than tasteful. Accordingly, A WINDHAM HILL CHRISTMAS is far from the crass, mass-market commerciality of so many hastily assembled pop-crossover holiday collections. For this outing, Windham Hill gathered ...
| | Gondwana Together CD (1999)
Purr-Fect Melodies music CDs
$10.15 The members of Gondwana grew up in Pincoya, the poorest ghetto of Santiago, Chile. They eventually converted to Rastafarianism and began a career in reggae music; this, their debut album, was released in Chile by BMG Latin in 1997, and is now being issued in the U.S. for the first time by RAS. Some reggae fans will object to the high-gloss surface of this very tightly-produced album, but Dr. Dread (the head of RAS Records, who traveled to Santiago to produce Together) deserves praise for keeping the bass sound big and heavy and for not trying to get the band to sound Jamaican. The melodies and horn arrangements are definitely influenced by South American music, and the band frequently sings in Spanish. "Chainga Langa" is clearly a product of a culture not normally associated with reggae music, and yet it works beautifully as a reggae song. A few others (like the treacly "Smile Souling") work less well, but overall this is quite an impressive debut. (Phat Cherimoya Dub is ...
| | Tangerine Dream Phaedra CD (1974)
Purr-Fect Melodies songs
$8.85 The title track is an almost spooky exercise in synth/sequencer tension and dynamics: while eerie atmospheres of Mellotron go head to head with spiraling Moogs, dense, humming sequencer webs percolate along the surface, motile and mobile. The album's closer, "Sequent C," leaves the listener breathless, as black electronic clouds form and dissipate and the surrounding space becomes corporeal sound. PHAEDRA remains one of the seminal recordings of the electronic movement, and stands up--even years later--as an original, ...
| | Douglas Spotted Eagle Pray CD (1998)
Purr-Fect Melodies album
$12.39 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Douglas Spotted Eagle's 1998 release PRAY highlights not only his virtuosic flute playing but also his ability to blend together traditional Native American music (chants and drumming) with digital production. Each track on PRAY evokes the deep, mystical underpinnings of the Native American culture. This music is born from a place that exists beyond the power lines, outside the trappings and prejudices of Western civilization. While it might seem then that the use of drum loops, keyboards, and other modern studio accoutrements would detract from Spotted Eagle's ability to speak to his listener, the noted flutist uses these instruments merely as tools to create music centered on prayer and worship. In fact, each song on PRAY is a paean to the traditional Indian way of life. The solemn "Listen With Your Heart" features Spotted Eagle's beautiful legato flute in a solo setting. "Dreamwalk" is equally somber, as Spotted ...

| | Wade Imre Morissette Strong As Diamonds CD (2007)
Purr-Fect Melodies album
$13.79 For Strong as Diamonds, Wade Imre Morissette and collaborator Mike Southworth have stepped up the production and paid more attention to pop song structures, as if to say there is very little difference between the meditative "yoga epics" of Morissette's first album and your typical pop single. They may even have scored a potential crossover hit with the hooky "Shine On." But with the addition of programming and a host of other exotic instruments, Morissette brings listeners the next level of yoga music. And, as was the case with his indie debut, Morissette delivers a great album that also happens to function in the yoga genre. The songs are fuller and sharper, and the playing is tighter. But the consistent meditative quality that marked ...
