There are few singers in modern merengue who are daring enough to stray from the well-beaten path. If one doesn't like a certain merenguero's vocal stylings, they're probably not going to like those of the next, either. Both in timbre and inflection, the style is pretty homogeneous. One of the few that does not fit inside the box, and his fans are grateful for it, is Toño Rosario. The dark, thick color of his voice sets him apart from the bright, brassy pack. Rosario's ornamentation is as smooth and rich as molasses, bringing to mind the crooners or bolero performers of yesteryear. In a world of barking trumpets, Rosario is a soulful tenor saxophone. Not only does Rosario distinguish himself as one of the D.R.'s easiest on the ears, but the arrangements on his 2004 release, Resistiré, are consistently well thought out and subtle. The horn lines throughout glide smoothly over the energetic rhythm section. Neither they nor their frontman seem in a hurry to prove something, which puts the listener at ease to enjoy the music. The compositions are plenty joyful and exuberant, but lacking the edgy, overly caffeinated quality so many contemporaries can't shake. It is no surprise this record was nominated for a Latin Grammy. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

Resistire Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Another masterpiece Another great album by el Cuco. One of his best albums yet. Just wasnt happy with the skip on the first song. Submitted by jnegron154 (NYC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It's About Time! Enough non-sense about merengue not being at the top of its game. This is perfect example why Toño Rosario will live forever.Simply because he has just finished reviving lyrics in merengue, but most importantly "Con Mucho Juicio." If this album doesn't give you goosebumps nothing will!!! Submitted by H_Adames (New York, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Tremendo disco I am with the crowd. This album is the Tono Rosario of old and one of best merengueros from "la tierra del merengue". Tono usually delivers. I would say his repertoire is flawless. Not too many artists have this claim to fame. I own all his albums and in the past some have always stood out like: "Me olvide de vivir", "Seguire" (I always deemed that album as his best) "Exclusivo", the title defines it all and let's not forget "Amor Jollao". However, Resistire, is the cream of crop and once again reassures us that el “merengue dominicano" is here to stay. Bravo Tono que sigas acabando.

A masterpiece This is truly the greatest expression of modern merengue. Tono Rosario has made it, a great masterpiece, bringing together his great music for all the people that enjoy merengue.
The new album "resistire" is only compared to "yo soy tono", the one that broke the record that "Volver a Empezar" set.
Now that Merengue is not in the its best moments, this is a great way to begin a process of bringing the best quality that Sergio Vargas, Toros Band and others give to the public.
Surely enough, this is one of the most remarkable completions that Tono has made. Surely the best exponent of "Merengue Bomba".
Tono Rosario is "acabando" with his new CD. Submitted by Frank (San Francisco, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Oscar D'Leon Asi Soy CD (2004)
Resistire CD music
$8.49 There are few names in salsa that command as much respect as that of Oscar D'Leon. His first release with Sony International in a decade, Asi Soy reaffirms and even furthers that association. Seldom has D'Leon sounded so suave, or his band so tight. This Venezuelan native has established himself as one of the premier salsa acts operating today. This could be due to his unswerving commitment to quality and a traditional approach, avoiding any modern influence that might adulterate or pollute. For those D'Leon fans hoping to hear what this esteemed artist might do with a stylistically mixed palette, ...
| | Kinito Mendez Celebra Conmigo CD (2004)
Resistire music CDs
$8.55 With nearly a decade as a solo recording artist under his belt, Kinito Mendez's popularity in his native Dominican Republic is hard won, and hence quite stable. Eight albums as a solo artist and collaborations with several popular groups to his credit qualifies Mendez as a veteran of the merengue genre. Unfortunately, Kinito's large and loyal fan base did not result in chart success for his 2004 release, with only one track, "Hony Tu Si Jony," landing a spot on Billboard. With mixed success like that, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Celebra Conmigo was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the year of its release. Though he did not win the award, the nomination was certainly a feather in Kinito's cap. Musically, Celebra Conmigo is an aptly named ...
| | El Gran Combo Aqui Estamos Y...De Verdad! CD (2004)
Resistire songs
$10.09 To call el Gran Combo de Puerto Rico a salsa classic would be the understatement of a lifetime. Words like "mythic" or "legendary" would better describe their weight and ubiquitous presence in the salsa world. Their 2004 release Aquí Estamos y...de Verdad! is in keeping with their tradition of excellence, and the Latin Grammy nomination it garnered is well deserved. Musical director Rafael Ithier favors ...
