The first full-length collaboration between two of indie rock's most ubiquitous figures, SUPERWOLF finds wandering troubadour Bonnie "Prince" Billy (AKA Will Oldham) and guitarist Matt Sweeney (formerly of Chavez and Zwan) hitting yet another musical plateau. While the terrain explored on SUPERWOLF is in keeping with past Bonnie "Prince" Billy releases (most directly 1998's somber, haunting I SEE A DARKNESS and 2003's hushed, tender MASTER AND EVERYONE), it's surprising to learn that Sweeney is credited as the sole writer of the album's music (with Oldham handling the lyrics). From soft acoustic ballads ("Only Someone Running") to plaintive sing-alongs ("Lift Us Up") to epic tales of heartbreak ("Blood Embrace"), SUPERWOLF is technically a stripped-down affair, yet its impact is far-reaching and expansive. Album opener "My Home Is the Sea" perfectly captures the spirit of the project, beginning softly, but building to an electrifying climax of sloppy guitar virtuosity. With SUPERWOLF, Oldham and Sweeney have made an album that plays to both artists' strengths.

Superwolf
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Superwolf
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem ...
| | Low Great Destroyer CD (2005)
Superwolf
$11.55 Low's seventh full-length album, THE GREAT DESTROYER, marks a literal departure for the Duluth, Minnesota trio, with the band leaving its longtime label, Kranky, in favor of uber-indie taste-makers, Sub Pop. The overall sound of the record reflects the transition, as Low hits new heights in both volume and aggression, particularly on the fuzzed-out "Monkey" and the swelling "Everybody's Song." During "On the Edge Of" and "When I Go Deaf," guitarist Alan Sparhawk unleashes gloriously distorted Neil Young-worthy leads, while "Broadway (So Many People)" balances amped-up rock with the group's trademark hushed melodies.
Those ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Superwolf
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, but not quite, out of control. Oberst's eccentric vocal delivery makes his pairings here with ever-graceful harmony singer Emmylou Harris intriguing, particularly on the rambling shuffle of "Another Travellin' Song." ...
| | M Ward Transistor Radio CD (2005)
Superwolf
$13.05 On his second album for Merge Records, M. Ward refines his inventive indie-folk sound, opting for a pleasantly laid-back mood. The record opens with a beautiful instrumental reading of Brian Wilson's "You Still Believe in Me," a song so marked by Ward's distinctive acoustic-guitar phrasing that it's easy to forget it's a classic Beach Boys tune. Throughout TRANSISTOR RADIO, Ward is an idiosyncratic wonder--he sounds like he's been recorded at a turn-of-the-20th-century tavern on "One Life Away," while "Big Boat" conjures up the atmosphere of a 1950s Sun Records studio rehearsal. ...
| | La Ley Libertad CD (2003)
Superwolf
$7.29 Rock en Español has become established as a genre, but, in truth, it's just rock music sung in Spanish -- albeit rock covering a lot of territory, from the innovative to the mundane. The problem with La Ley is that they are at the mundane end of the musical spectrum. The trio is simply your average rock band. No one doubts their commitment to what they do and the cause of peace. But while occasional melodies have a reasonable pop quotient, there's nothing to make them stand out from any rock pack anywhere. The spark is missing, at least on this disc, and there's ...

Superwolf
$12.95 A little-known Glasgow-based Oi band that originally formed in 1979 and split up after only a few years, External Menace regrouped in the mid-'90s with new lead singer Ian Welsh (replacing original member Wullie Hammill, who had died in the late '80s), original guitarist John Sneddon, and a revolving door of rhythm sections. The new ...

Superwolf
$10.39 International sound fusionists Balkan Beat Box work more of their energetic, hybrid magic on their sophomore release, NU MED. There are plenty of Eastern European influences here, sure, but it's the elements of hip-hop, funk, electronica, R&B, reggae, and traditional brass-band sounds that makes the album a nonstop joy-ride of rhythmic and melodic surprises. By creating party music that blends every style under the sun, Balkan Beat Box makes the powerful, evergreen political statement that universal brotherhood is only as ...
