String Quartet Tribute to Tupac arranges 13 of the MC's songs for violin, viola, and cello. The all-instrumental tracks are stripped of 2Pac's slinky braggadocio. But String Quartet's players figure out how to make "All Eyez on Me" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" at once taut and melodic; they lean hard on "California Love"'s rhythmic swing, and treat "To Live & Die in L.A." with a graceful violin lead that's sunny and mournful all at once, much like 2Pac's celebratory/fatalistic original. "How Do U Want It" and "I Ain't Mad at Cha" don't work as well -- while quite capable technically, they lose their connection to the source material without the raps or beats. Still, String Quartet Tribute to Tupac is an interesting take on the fallen MC's musical legacy, particularly for die-hard fans. ~ Johnny Loftus

String Quartet Tribute To Tupac album
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with THE E.N.D. (an acronym for "Energy Never Dies"), their third studio effort. Combining Will.I.Am's thumping 808 kick drum-infused beats with production ...

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition
String Quartet Tribute To Tupac music CDs
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," is more immediately gratifying, the impeccably produced ballads of the first disc represent a vast improvement on the often awkward torch songs that weighed down Beyoncé's first solo record.
In non-Deluxe Edition form, Beyoncé's third solo studio album is as concise as 2006's B'day, but it is divided into two discs as a way to emphasize the singer's distinct personalities. It's a gimmick, of course -- a flimsy one. Revealed through interviews in 2005, Sasha was said to be Beyoncé's "stage persona," an embodiment of the outgoing, aggressive, on-stage Beyoncé that doesn't necessarily represent the real Beyoncé. Sasha now ...

| | Stevie Wonder Definitive Collection CD (2002)
String Quartet Tribute To Tupac album
$10.79 Missing in action for much of the 1990s, Stevie Wonder is a living legend whose consistent creative output is sorely missed. THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION provides a snapshot overview of Wonder's stellar legacy starting back in 1963 as a teen musical prodigy with the exuberant "Fingertips Part 2." This jubilant tune, showcasing Wonder's much-touted facility on the chromatic harmonica, is a powerful harbinger of things to come. Along the way are classics that find this Michigan native going from being a one-man Motown hit machine to a young artist whose vision eschewed singles-based sensibilities for album-long artistic statements.
Wonder's '60s gems include "I Was Made to Love Her," "For Once in My Life," and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours." Of course, his '70s work is just as stunning, particularly socially conscious numbers like "Higher Ground" and "Living for the City." Equally stellar if less political are this legend's tributes to Duke Ellington ("Sir Duke"), Bob Marley ("Master Blaster [Jammin']"), and Caribbean music in general ("Boogie on Reggae Woman"). THE DEFINITIVE ...

String Quartet Tribute To Tupac music CDs
$16.95 Vocal harmony quartet the Ink Spots formed a kind of bridge between the showtune pop styles of the 1940s and the later street corner doo wop style of the 1950s and were arguably the first modern black vocal group. Rare Air 1937-1944 is a marvelous collection of extremely rare movie and radio transcriptions and plays like a live concert, showing off the range, talent, and personality of this endearing quartet. Bill Kenny's impossibly high tenor is spotlighted on an air check of "Maybe," and his easy control is breathtaking and as intimate as if he ...
