| Coasters/One By One Music Review Purchase Coasters/One By One CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
Coasters/One By One
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first ...

| | Arthur Conley Sweet Soul Music/Shake, Rattle & Roll CD (2004)
Coasters/One By One
$10.69 Casual soul fans know Arthur Conley from his smash hit from 1967, "Sweet Soul Music," a bubbling ode to soul giants like his mentor Otis Redding, Lou Rawls, Wilson Pickett, and Sammy Davis, Jr. (?). Collectables' 2004 compilation of Conley's 1967 releases (Sweet Soul Music and Shake Rattle & Roll) seeks to shed some light on Conley's other work. Sadly, there isn't much going on, as Conley is quite derivative and lightweight. His vocals switch between aping Otis and channeling Sam Cooke (check ...

| | Lootpack Lost Tapes CD (2004)
Coasters/One By One
$11.75 Although the release date was in 2004, the tracks on The Lost Tapes were actually recorded between 1994 and 1996, when Lootpack was still three friends in Oxnard, CA, trying to make it big. Fortunately for them -- and their fans -- the father of Lootpack member Madlib, Otis Jackson, Sr., had his own studio, Crate Diggas Palace, where these songs were recorded and where they stayed until the album was compiled and released. What is heard on The Lost Tapes sounds remarkably similar to Lootpack's 1999 release Soundpieces: Da Antidote!, and it's easy to see why the group attracted attention from Stones Throw. Madlib's beats are pretty straightforward (jazzy undertones, emphasis on bass, minimal production), but they're good, and they fit Wildchild's clean delivery. The album also boasts, in true hip-hop fashion, a wide selection ...
