| Red Tape Diaries Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Powerful of Rock 'n Roll Dopo tre album in studio, un doppio live, split compilations a decine, credo sarebbe giusto, per i STREETWALKIN’ CHEETAHS, di uscire dall’underground.

Red Tape Diaries album
$9.09 By the late 1970s, the golden age of '60s rock had devolved into a bloated corporate behemoth dominated by listless imitators of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Inspired by the anti-establishment subculture of American bands like Television and the New York Dolls, British manager-cum-svengali Malcolm McLaren assembled a ragtag quartet of working-class youth and transformed them into a revitalizing force that put the rebellion back into rock. McLaren's pre-fab band, The Sex Pistols, not only gave voice to the seething cultural resentments of their time but also influenced countless generations of punk and other forms of underground ...

| | Mars Volta Frances The Mute CD (2005)
Red Tape Diaries CD music
$11.49 FRANCES THE MUTE, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Mars Volta's stunning debut, DE-LOUSED IN THE COMATORIUM, finds the band's masterminds, Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (both formerly of At the Drive-In), diving further into their bizarre, unique sonic aesthetic. Here various forms of Latin music merge with ambient passages, jazzy interludes, and fierce progressive rock. The Latin influence, in fact, is more evident than ever, with Bixler Zavala often alternating between Spanish and English lyrics, and full-on salsa sections providing a melodic respite from the energetic chaos (particularly on "L'Via L'Viaquez," which features pianist Larry Harlow). Despite the complexity of FRANCES THE MUTE's suite-like song structures, the tracks form a fascinating whole, ...

| | Nainy Diabate Nafa CD
Red Tape Diaries songs
$15.89 Yet another musical Diabate, yet another spectacular female singer from Mali as Nainy Diabate proves right off the bat with a fierce opening salvo on "Magnoumako." Her first live gig was in late 1979 with the Rail Band de Bamako, and the music on Nafa mixes Western and traditional elements, with the n'goni and balafon prominently featured over the rock band base. The sprightly "Farafina Moussou" has an almost South African mbqanga feel with skittering guitar and punchy bass rhythm to the fore, Diabate singing more conversationally and her squad of female backing singers (who are excellent throughout) almost too "hot" with their support. "Treinanko" is more traditional, with Diabate's vocals again a bit edgier, and the low-key "Mamaya" works the traditional tip but with a more complex arrangement. "Massassai" is supposedly "Mande zouk" but while Diabate wails again over balafon ripples and bass riff, the snare-shot backbeat doesn't really have the jump-up factor of zouk (funny that the liner notes don't list "Dincole" among those tracks, because it's closer to a zouk feel). The repetition does get to trance groove land at the halfway point before the backing vocalists come in for a nice call-and-response finale. The festive "Mousso Dje" has a more pronounced Caribbean flavor, and "Fasso Kadi" comes more from the Latin side -- the bass keeps feinting at the "Twist and Shout" habanera line -- ...
