By the time Jeff Beck left the Yardbirds in late 1966, the group was down to a four-piece, with former session-man Jimmy Page left to handle the guitar duties. As the group disintegrated over the next year and a half, Page would end up taking the remnants of this group and turning it into Led Zeppelin.
This two-disc set includes LITTLE GAMES, the final Yardbirds project, as well as outtakes, and a few singles by Together, a group featuring Jim McCarty and Keith Relf. Despite the commercial problems facing the Yardbirds at the time, LITTLE GAMES showed a good deal of experimentation--with psychedelia ("Glimpses"), social commentary ("Little Soldier Boy") and with the group's beloved blues ("Drinking Muddy Water"). Page's influence resonates throughout, particularly on the acoustic "White Summer," which later had parts recycled in the Zeppelin classics "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "Black Mountain Side." The historical importance of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor" lay in the fact that it was the first time Jimmy Page employed the bowing technique which he became renowned for later in his career.

With THE YES ALBUM, Yes began an important new chapter in its career and defined much of what the next decade would bring. For their first album in four years, a renewed and re-personnelled Either/Orchestra dips into their own archives and also into the far reaches of ethnomusicology. Along with a half-dozen compositions by founder/leader/sax man Russ Gershon, the E/O have arranged a trio of popular tunes from Ethiopia into a disjointed suite which runs throughout the album. In the Brubeck-ian first installment, "Amiak Abet Abet," Gershon and longtime E/O trumpeter Tom Halter take vocal roles amid elephantine brass blasts. "Musicawi Silt" is a Hammond-tinged noir-y polyrhythm created by the band through a year of live performance. Gershon takes the lyrical line again for "Feker Aydelmwey," but the rhythm line is much more dramatic and responsive than in the other parts. The album's epic title track is more than true to its name, sweeping in with Gil Evans horns and tumbling drums then cooling to a slow swing. The Travellers Aid Trust was established in the late 1980s to combat recent British government legislation restricting the movement (and, indeed, the very existence) of "travellers" -- the so-called "hippie drop-outs" who roamed that green and pleasant land and made an annual nuisance of themselves at various sacred prehistoric sites. Widely considered the culprits behind any number of petty crimes, the Travellers' greatest sin was actually their refusal to adopt the more conventional values of the late 20th century, preferring to exist as best they could on its most radical fringes -- a stomping ground that had long proven fertile territory for such bands as Hawkwind, the Ozric Tentacles, Radio Mongolia, and the Agents of Chaos.

The 1974-1975 volume in Time-Life Music's Singers & Songwriters mail order series of double-disc compilations of soft rock popular music reflects the major event of the period, the emergence of John Denver as the country's top pop singles artist, by including two of his major hits, "Annie's Song" and "Sunshine on My Shoulder." (He had another four Top Five singles in the two years, three of which -- "Back Home Again," "I'm Sorry," and "Calypso" -- might have been included also.) Denver's rise was the latest manifestation of the popularity of literate ballads anchored by acoustic guitar playing that had been going on for several years by this point. Though usually romantic, these songs often had a bittersweet undercurrent that reflected the uncertain sexual mores of the time. Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man" was an ode to an affair with a married man, Melissa Manchester's "Midnight Blue" pleaded for one more night of love in a relationship that clearly was going south, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces' "Third Rate Romance" was a frank description of a barroom pickup leading to a one-night stand. In the past I filled up a box, a notebook, a little tape recorder full of songs and song ideas and when it started overflowing I’d dump them out onto the table and pick out what I thought were the songs with the best chances to make it past the dream stage.I decided to do a little Field Of Dreams work and start building the park before the players had been chosen for this team. I did have a list of titles, and I had some music that I liked, but very few of the songs were finished when we went into the studio.
