| | Megadeth Endgame CD (2009)
Right Right Now Now
$15.65 Lyricist: Dave Mustaine. Personnel: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, piano); Chris Broderick (guitar, acoustic guitar); James LoMenzo (bass guitar); Shawn Drover (drums, percussion); Chris Rodriguez, Chris Clancy (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Andy Sneap. Illustrator: John Lorenzi. Photographer: Ross Halfin. The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- ...

Additional personnel: Ernie Watts (saxophone); Ian Stewart (keyboards). Recorded live in New York, New York in 1981. Audio Remasterers: Stephen Marcussen; Stewart Whitmore. Photographer: Ken Regan. Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases the Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. Nevertheless, it isn't nearly enough grit to make it rock as hard as Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! or even Love You Live, depressingly enough. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Like Love You Live before it, Still Life showcases the Stones as pure entertainers, although the band adds enough rhythmic grit to keep the record from sinking into pure showbiz formula. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine By ...

| | Pearl Jam Backspacer CD (2009) (Import) United Kingdom
Right Right Now Now
$19.79 Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, Pearl Jam surprised fans again with an album containing some of the unit's catchiest, poppiest songs ever. According to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, most of the new material was written prior to recording, which was a significant departure from the group's usual in-studio jamming method of composition. The result is one of the unit's most focused and accessible works since the debut album TEN. The first single "The Fixer" (written my drummer Matt Cameron) is a Kiss-like bit of straight-up pop masquerading as hard rock, while "Just Breathe" is melancholy acoustic singer-songwriter music so sharply crafted it would fit well on an Jack Johnson album. Throughout, Pearl Jam performs with its trademark directness, mustering the kind of earthy, cohesive sound that only veteran bands can deliver. Pearl Jam made peace with their hard rock past on their eponymous ...

| | Tribute To Marilyn Manson CD (2002)
Right Right Now Now
$13.49 Personnel: Fred Coury (vocals, guitar, programming); Christina Kartsonakis (vocals). For those who are old enough to remember Alice Cooper in his '70s heyday, Marilyn Manson is hardly revolutionary -- entertaining and great for a lot of darkly theatrical fun, but not revolutionary. Cooper, one of rock's true innovators, was genuinely disturbing in his time. Something as gruesome as 1973's "I Love the Dead" (just to give one example) was nothing more than sick humor, but it was the sort of sick humor that sent shock waves through suburban, white-picket-fence-loving middle America. When Manson mined the same shock rock waters 20 years later, it wasn't daring or cutting edge -- after Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Blackie Lawless, Slayer, G.G. Allin, grindcore, and gangsta rap, it was hard to get bent out of shape over Manson's obsession with the dark side. ...
