ONE is Dirty Vegas's follow-up to their successful debut, which sold well on the basis of the hit single "Days Go By." But Steve Smith, Ben Harris, and Paul Harris have taken a step away from the dance-pop of their first album, moving instead in the direction of guitar-based, radio-friendly pop. Like many of their contemporaries in the mid-2000s, Dirty Vegas worship at the altar of breezy 1980s synth-pop, but ONE bears not a trace of the detached, arty feel of many post-punk-revival bands.
Instead, songs like "Roses" and "Home Again" are quite traditional, building on smooth, accessible melodic passages and themes of love and longing in a way that fits Dirty Vegas for adult-contemporary radio. Though Dirty Vegas is largely considered an electronic act, the programming on ONE takes a back seat to Smith, Harris, and Harris's heartfelt songwriting, and, while there are plenty of synthesizers and stylish production flourishes, the album falls firmly in the camp of light, mainstream pop.

One album
$8.85 The title track is an almost spooky exercise in synth/sequencer tension and dynamics: while eerie atmospheres of Mellotron go head to head with spiraling Moogs, dense, humming sequencer webs percolate along the surface, motile and mobile. The album's closer, "Sequent C," leaves the listener breathless, as black electronic clouds form and dissipate and the surrounding space becomes corporeal sound. PHAEDRA remains one of the seminal recordings of the electronic movement, and stands up--even years later--as an original, stunning piece of music.
Widely considered one of Tangerine Dream's masterworks, fallout from the sonic phenomenon that is PHAEDRA can still be found lingering in the ambient movement of the early '90s and in much of contemporary electronica. ...
| | Moby Wait For Me CD (2009)
One CD music
$13.19 Following the decadent, club-style excursions of 2008's HOTEL, Moby returns for a more contemplative sound on the melancholic WAIT FOR ME. Working through deeply personal material and a more intimate, though at times cinematic, sound palette, the album ranks as among his best in over 10 years.
Moby's most unified and understated album, and all the better for it, WAIT FOR ME is a morose set of elegantly bleary material, quite a shift from the hedonistic club tracks of LAST NIGHT. Dominated by instrumentals, "Shot in the Back of the Head" is the most evocative of the bunch, seemingly pulled from an unreleased David Lynch film scored by the Afghan Whigs circa GENTLEMEN--a lament from a dustbowl, full of mournful slide guitar and dewy electric piano. Other than "Mistake"--a glum neo-post-punk rave-up that, despite its cathartic release, remains downcast--Moby leaves the vocals to ...

His music involves a fission of Afrocentric and Western tonal, modal, quartal, serial, and electronic elements into an expressive voice that defies simple categorization as either premeditated or spontaneous composition. The range of his works spans from numerous solo cycles for various woodwinds to chamber configurations and electro-acoustic symphonic works written in an eclectic array of style. Originally nurtured in New York, Hesterian Musicism is a continuation of his former Bay Area based ensemble, The Contemporary Jazz Art Movement (1970s & 80s). He has recorded his own compositions, since the early 1970s, featuring the Contemporary Jazz Art Movement on earlier albums and Hesterian Musicism on more recent recordings. Hester continues to perform with both East and West Coast members of Hesterian Musicism. Hesterian Musicism is not only the name he coined for his performance ensemble, but ...
