Undercover album
$11.45 Of all British rock's least enviable exports, the national predilection for faceless pop stars -- light of ideas, big on gimmicks, and short of substance -- has always baffled Anglophiles, even as the Anglos themselves send them rocketing chartwards. In the mid-'70s, Tina Charles was certainly the reigning queen of such creations, a sub-disco pop diva who, though she never dented a chart stateside, took six singles into her native Top 30. This, her 1976 debut album, was titled for the positively enormous number one hit that launched that sequence. Pure period disco, with soaring strings, chukka-chukka guitar, and all the right bells and whistles, it must be confessed that it has some charm. Unfortunately, Charles herself doesn't have much of a voice, singing straight from the throat and sounding painfully strangled. It can't have ...

| | Front 242 Moments CDs (2008) Limited Edition
Undercover CD music
$25.85 Issued in 2008, MOMENTS. presents the veteran Belgian techno act Front 242 performing live. Given the band's mechanistic inclinations, the tracks on this set often sound like studio recordings, as evinced on the ominous "Until Death" (from 1988's FRONT BY FRONT) and the pulsing "Take One," a single dating back to the early `80s.
Seeing as how analog synthesizers started making a comeback in 2006/2007 after years of digital and laptop dominance had wiped them off the scene, the veteran Belgian industrial group Front 242 decided to re-load their early analog material into their new gear and head out on the road for what they called the "Worldwide Vintage Tour." All sounds were "carefully re-designed" to "match the spirit of their time" and while the band and their loyal fan base clog Internet message boards with discussions on how everything here is "re-invented," Moments... isn't much more than a live album with the usual updates. The good news is that it's a thoroughly exciting live album where classics like "U-Men," "Body to Body," and "Headhunter" sound louder, punchier, and more aggressive than they ever have before. The original recordings remain definitive as they ...

| | Percy Faith Angel Of The Morning/Black Magic Woman CD (2002)
Undercover songs
$10.59 One looks for something complementary when two LPs are put together on a single CD reissue, but the Percy Faith albums Angel of the Morning and Black Magic Woman are quite different and don't really belong together. A superficial examination might suggest that both consist largely of Faith's interpretations of pop music from, respectively, the late '60s and the early '70s, and that should make them a good ...

| | General Store Mountain Rescue CD (2008)
Undercover music CDs
$12.09 The solo-recording General Store, aka Tam Johnstone (son of Elton John guitarist Davey Johnstone; "Mountain" is dedicated "for Dee and Gus" -- John's bassist Dee Murray, died 1992, and producer Gus Dudgeon, died 2002), has direct pieces of roots rock and country as well as power-pop and pop. That's in the same way that Mojave 3 does (Neil Halstead loaned gear and Al Forrester did the sleeve layout) and four big B's of his Dad's acquaintance, Badfinger, Beatles (in this case, George Harrison), Beach Boys, and Byrds did -- three guiding lights on a fairly polished early `70s singer-songwriter record. There's a particular Beach Boys' Brian Wilson homage on "Girls from the Mall," but the country Byrds/Gene Clark is more prominent. Talent apparently can be passed down the family line, as well as a good record collection. ~ Jack Rabid
A Modern Day Masterpiece! The General Store is one Tam Johnstone - son of Davey Johnstone (full-time guitarist for Elton John since 1972).MOUNTAIN RESCUE is the anticipated follow-up to Local Honey, the critically-acclaimed debut from The General Store (2002, Not Lame Recordings). This new album brilliantly combines lush Beach Boys and CSNY-style harmonies, the West Coast country of The Flying Burrito Brothers and Beatles-inspired melodies to create an album that can only be described ...
