Usher has the reputation as a loverman, largely because he fits the bill so well. He looks good, his material is smooth and seductive, and he has a nice voice, even if he tends to favor melisma. This has been true throughout his career, and remains true on his third album, 8701, a classy, seductive affair masterminded by Usher, Jermaine Dupri, and Antonio "L.A." Reid. There's not much new here, but Usher does move further in both directions -- the ballads are lusher, the dance numbers hit a bit harder -- but not so much so that it's really noticeable. Overall, the record is probably his strongest yet, but he still suffers from a lack of really memorable material (the singles usually are pretty good, but the album tracks are filler) and a tendency to oversing. Because of these two things, 8701 is more mood music than anything else, and while it does work fairly well on that level, it's not memorable outside of that mood. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
R&B mack daddy Usher puts a lot of himself into 8701; that's apparent even from the title itself, which represents the year Usher began exploring the world of music ('87) and the place where music brought him by the time of this recording ('01). He starts thing out in grand style with the romantic "U Remind Me." "I Don't Know" takes a hip-hop turn with a contribution from P. Diddy (that's Puff Daddy for those of you arriving late), but Usher is quick to point out that he's strictly about partying and loving, not about thug life. While there are some amped-up, percolating tunes that make good use of Usher's high energy ("I Can't Let U Go"), he really hits his stride when he falls into the familiar position of heartthrob/crooner. His sensual cooing, breathy tone, and smooth-as-silk delivery on the likes of "Can U Help Me" (Usher seems to have graduated from the Prince school of song titles) and "How Do I Say" play to this charmer's strengths and are sure to keep the sizable female quotient of his audience sufficiently entranced.Rolling Stone (8/30/01, p.125) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...His velvety voice and sky-high tolerance for crooning about girls are on full display....Usher's vocals are impressively adaptable....8701's wispy slow jams and booming club cuts strike a sweet nerve."
Vibe (9/01, pp.235-6) - 3 discs out of 5 - "...A steady flow of bump'n'grind promises to the ladies....managing to bring some worthwhile dishes to the table....A consistent 3rd album that has a good chance amongst a marketplace overflowing with crooning R&B clones..."

My Music History 101~I've been making music or other sorts of noises, (I also enjoy howling with our Greyhound) since age 3, when my parents purchased a cheap Magnus Cord Organ. I must have shown promise, because my my mom eventually purchased a wonderfully large upright grand piano she located at a local Salvation Army thrift store. I've been hooked on piano ever since. At age five, I started piano lessons, violin lessons at age 7, and taught myself how to play the guitar at age 9. I composed my first song at age 11. I studied voice with Jack Coleman off and on from about age 10 through 18. (I'm attempting to learn penny whistle and recorder.)Growing up I dearly wanted to make music my profession. Sadly for me, music was looked down upon and considered unsuitable as an avocation. So, while I never stopped playing, I more or less gave up on the idea of a musical career, and concentrated on other things. I was born with severe food and chemical sensitivities, and have been ill, almost since birth. However, rather than get the treatment I needed, I was labeled a "difficult child" and a hysteric. I endured decades of illness, during which time I was told my symptoms were all in my head. It took over 40 years, and a few brushes with death for me to get properly diagnosed. My life has been hard. By age 45 (2000), I was sick, frail and on permanent disability. Late 2001 I underwent surgery, and became so ill afterward I nearly died. That same year I was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). Interestingly, the same year it was determined my physical symptoms were NOT "all in my head", and the label of mentally ill, removed. By 2003 I was so horribly ill I'd lost all desire to live. That winter, after three hospitalizations, I went home determined to never again ...

Nominated for Best New Artists 2007 by Canada's National Maple Blues Awards.Back in 2001, I went on a mystic, musical pilgrimage to the Land of the Blues with my buddy who had introduced me to the music years before. Down in Memphis, Clarksdale and along the muddy banks and lost towns of the Mississippi, the music comes up out of the ground. It echoes from every store front and brushes by you in the streets. You can’t help but feel it. And pretty much everything I do in music is about feel, so I felt it.Standing in front of the Lorraine Motel gave me the feeling for the song. Working it up with Johnny at his home, years later, was also mystical given that he lives on a street called Lorraine. Many of the songs on this album have odd and curious roots. The rhythm of a bus ride and bitter memories of my family’s past inspired “St. Joseph Blvd.” It’s just odd that my wife’s Uncle Jack, who plays the traditional sticks on the track once lived on that street. I had no idea."40 Bucks and A Beer” came from Ed’s take on what we once got paid for gigs. The simple, moving guitar lines Crosbie plays on “My Sun is Shinin’ On You” took me back to desperate, lonely times where the lyric was waiting for me. The grooves, the lyrics, even the imagery on this album, came about like that. When Nina saw us live and offered to do a poster for us, she said she felt something about the band that was charming, sexy and a bit mysterious. That sounded pretty good to us, so when she presented the Snake Charmer image, it felt right and looked great.Above all, making this album has been a journey. Holding the band together, and how we came together, is another mystical story of chance encounters and connections. Very much like the trip taken years ago to that strange and ...

Korn: Brian (vocals, guitar); Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipes); J. Munky Shaffer (guitar, background vocals); Fieldy (bass, background vocals); David (drums, background vocals).

Recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios, Malibu, California.
"Shoots And Ladders" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
With little publicity, radio play, or MTV exposure, Korn took their eponymous 1994 debut to platinum status. Like all unexpected successes, it's easier to understand its popularity in retrospect. Although they disdain the "metal" label, there's no question that Korn are among the vanguard of post-grunge alt-metal outfits. Borrowing from Jane's Addiction, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Helmet, Faith No More, Anthrax, Public Enemy, and N.W.A, Korn developed a testosterone-fueled, ultra-aggressive metal-rap hybrid. They're relentless, both in their musical attack and in lead singer Jonathan Davis' bleak, violent lyrics. Tales of abuse and alienation run rampant throughout the record. It's often disturbing and, to some ears, even offensive, but their music can have a cathartic effect that makes up for their vulgarity and questionable lapses in taste. It's a powerful sound and one that actually ...
