Adapted from the short stories of Richard Wright, John Henrik Clarke and Maya Angelou, three tales of laughter, of tears, of different ways to search for America's Dream. Actors: Danny Glover, Jasmine Guy, Tate Donovan, Wesley Snipes, Lorraine Toussaint. This powerful trilogy of films, produced by HBO, deals with the black experience in America in a variety of settings. In THE BOY WHO PAINTED CHRIST, directed by Bill Duke, an elementary school principal (Wesley Snipes) whose career is moving forward faces a painful choice when a student at his school paints a portrait for a competition of Jesus Christ as a black man. LONG BLACK SONG deals with a poor sharecropper (Danny Glover) whose bored wife flirts with a white salesman while he's out at work. In THE REUNION, Lorraine Toussaint plays a successful jazz singer in Chicago in 1958. She has an emotional encounter that brings back painful memories of growing up a servant's daughter in a wealthy white home. The three shorts are all notable for the direct and honest way they deal with the complexities of black life in America during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. AMERICA'S DREAM is an acclaimed made-for-cable trilogy of tales dealing with the African American experience. THE BOY WHO PAINTED CHRIST BLACK, directed by Bill Duke, from John Henrik Clarke's story, follows a small-town principal as he tries to defend a controversial student; LONG BLACK SONG is based on Richard Wright's story about a man who sacrifices his meager wealth for a cheating wife; and THE REUNION is based on Maya Angelou's tale of a jazz pianist struggling to overcome her racism-filled past.
This film was originally shown on HBO in 1995.
Paris Barclay, who directed one of the three segments, is an acclaimed music video director.
Kevin Rodney Sullivan, who directed one of the segments, also directed SOUL OF THE GAME, about Negro League baseball, for HBO.
The film was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.
Danny Glover won a Cable Ace Award for his performance in LONG BLACK SONG.
Wesley Snipes, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and Jasmine Guy were nominated for NAACP Image Awards for their performances in THE BOY WHO PAINTED CHRIST BLACK.

America's Dream Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Welcomed Stories All three stories are well acted. I suspect time was a factor which prevented in-depth character-development. It appeared to me that the relationship between the traveling salesman and the wife in "Long Black Song" happened much too smoothly and quickly. It, as well as "The Boy Who Painted Christ Black" seem to paint African-American men as somewhat timid. Ms. Guy, plays her role well, as does Wesley Snipes, but Clarke's story has a strong principal and no wife at all. There was no better job awaiting him if he did the Supt's biddings. Neither had the Superintendent seen the picture before the assembly. The lady teacher in the story, if anyone, seemed a bit puzzled when she first saw the picture, She recovered her composure, however, and asked the young man the origin of the idea of painting such a picture. I think the movie would have been powerful enough by remainig true to the original story.
I enjoyed all three, and will watch them again, and will probably show them to young people with whom I work. I'll also recommend them to classroom teachers with whom I work.

America's Dream review
$10.25 Set in 1962; Produced and released in 1973.
AMERICAN GRAFFITI presents a powerful collage of youth on the brink of maturity just before the assassination of J.F.K.. Based on George Lucas's own teenage hot-rodding days in Modesto, California, this brilliant, bittersweet comedy inspired numerous other productions, including the long-running TV series HAPPY DAYS. Lucas's second feature film (following THX 1138), AMERICAN GRAFFITI contains an early screen appearance by Harrison Ford, who would figure heavily in the director's next movie, the sci-fi epic STAR WARS. The film follows one night in the lives of several recently graduated high school students. The genial Steve (Ron Howard) prepares to leave for college the next day, and Laurie (Cindy Williams), his girlfriend, is upset by his impending departure. Laurie's brother, Curt (Richard Dreyfuss), the class intellectual, is also slated for college, but he has serious doubts about his future. Also included here are the hopeless ...

America's Dream video
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just ...
