| | Shorty Rogers & His Orchestra Wizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs CD Shorty Rogers & His Orchestra Discography of CDs
Personnel: Shorty Rogers (trumpet); Giants. Recording information: Radio Recorders Annex, Hollywood, CA (02/03/1959-02/10/1959). Arranger: Shorty Rogers. All of trumpeter/arranger Shorty Rogers' recordings from the 1950s (which were quite influential on both arrangers and cool-toned soloists) are well worth searching for. Unfortunately, many are out of print, including half of this excellent LP; the second side has been reissued on the Bluebird CD Swings. On the first side, Rogers and his Orchestra (which includes such fine soloists as Jimmy Giuffre on clarinet and tenor, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, altoists Bud Shank and Herb Geller, guitarist Barney Kessel and pianist Pete Jolly) perform five familiar songs from Oz, plus "The Jitterbug," which did not make it into the final cut. This date is rounded out by fresh versions of five of Arlen's most famous songs, including "Get Happy," "Blues In the Night" and "That Old Black Magic." Wonderful music. ~ Scott Yanow Wizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs Music Shorty Rogers & His Orchestra Wizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs Songs Wizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs Review

Wizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs
$9.25 Originally released as two albums on the Charter label as LENA GOES LATIN & LENA SINGS YOUR REQUESTS. Personnel: Lena Horne (vocals); Marty Paich (arranger, conductor); Shorty Rogers (arranger); Lennie Heyton (conductor). Personnel: Lena Horne (vocals). After a lengthy and successful run on RCA from 1955-1962, Lena Horne cut a few albums for the small Charter label. Picking up on the period craze for all things Latin -- mambo, bossa nova, or otherwise -- Horne recorded this 1963 collection of swinging, Latinized standards for the company. With husband and bandleader Lennie Hayton directing a crack group through some fine Shorty Rogers arrangements, Horne shows off her powerful and supple voice on both obscure ...

Wizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs
$12.89 Personnel: Brian Olive (saxophone); Matt Aljian (percussion). Additional personnel: Brian Olive (saxophone); Matt Aljian. Audio Mixers: Brendan Benson; The Waxwings. Recording information: Grand Studio, Detroit, MI. The Waxwings' third album is the Detroit band's second disappointing effort in a row. After a promising debut album, their second record followed the same formula of blissful guitar pop but forgot the memorable tunes and overcooked the production. Let's Make Our Descent strays from the formula and replaces it with an even less successful one. They seem to have fallen under the spell of the Rolling Stones at some point; the album is full of haphazard slide guitar, chunky rhythm guitars, and midtempo bluesy tempos that sound cribbed right ...

Recording information: C.P. MacGregor Recording Studio, Hollywood, CA (1944-1945). It's virtually impossible to imagine modern music without the contributions of Les Paul. Not only was he a brilliant jazz guitarist with no fear of pop or country, he literally laid the framework for how a good electric guitar should be made when he designed his famous Les Paul model for Gibson Guitars. Add in the fact that he single-handedly invented multi-track recording with the release ...
