Amor Del Bueno album
$11.19 One of the most well known figures in pop/R&B-leaning jazz, saxophonist David Sanborn had a highly successful stint with the Warner Bros. label from the mid-1970s to the mid-'80s. This collection draws 16 tracks from that period in Sanborn's career, with songs ranging from the funky "Chicago Song" to the smooth "Lesley Ann" to the spare, delicate "Lotus Blossom." For listeners whose only connection to jazz is via Kenny G, this Sanborn sampler is the next logical step.
Compilation producer: Matt Pierson.
Engineers include: Marti Robertson, Michael Hutchinson, Hilary Bercovici.

| | Jeff Golub Out Of The Blue CD (1999)
Amor Del Bueno music CDs
$9.09 Jeff Golub is categorized in the smooth jazz genre because he's an instrumentalist; at heart, though, he's an Eric Clapton styled rockin' blues guitar player who, on Out of the Blue, finds himself stumbling happily into Tower of Power-like jam sessions. He pulls no punches from the start, rocking hard and furious with his distorted electric thrust darting around and over Ricky Peterson's brooding B-3 and a three-piece horn section on "Wanna Funk?" Same idea, south of the border style, on the similarly hard-hitting Latin blues hurricane "Manteca," where Golub explores some improvisational territory in between sizzling solo sections by his longtime friend Rick Braun. Golub co-produced the album with keyboardist Philippe Saisse, whose comparatively laid-back style keeps Golub in the cool on more mid-tempo, easy to latch onto pieces like "Indiana Moon"; the guitarist gets more aggressive as the song progresses, but the hooky piano harmony line stays a constant. Saisse helps bring out Golub's completely meditative side on "The Velvet ...

Amor Del Bueno CD music
$15.15 You may not know who Frank Royster is, but many of you have heard him before. He added guitars to the first (most excellent) Fire Apes CD - "A Pefect Day For Bananafish" and was a member of the band from 1996-1998! He's been a vet of the Charleston, SC music scene for close to 20 years. The songs contained here were recorded and written over a period of about 12 years. The album was co-produced by Frank and Paolo Liccairdi, who has played drums on all of the Fire Apes releases to date. He also co-produced The Apes' "Central Park Carousel". Very influenced by the Beatles, Elvis Costello, Beach Boys, Marshall Crenshaw, and The Smithereens. In other words, a group of pop hook-meisters that we all love! In fact Jim Babjak of the Smithereens plays guitar on the track "Pressure". Vocally, Frank's a cross between Elvis Costello (witness "Say Goodbye" that sounds like it came off "My Aim Is True"!) and Pat DiNizio! ...

| | LEN Diary Of The Madmen CD (2005) Bonus Track
Amor Del Bueno songs
$13.09 LEN's 1999 hit "Steal My Sunshine" was an absolute jam. Its Andrea True Connection break and bassline bump meshed seamlessly to Sharon Costanzo's exuberant vocal, and like the best summer songs its lyrical agenda involved little more than getting stupid and lying in the grass. Unfortunately the boozing, partying smash-up that followed LEN's breakthrough killed the combo's momentum dead, and "Sunshine" was relegated to '90s rock compilations. LEN's principals (Costanzo and her producer/vocalist brother, Marc) holed up in a studio, but the sessions stalled out. Still, what was recorded has surfaced in 2005 as Diary of the Madmen, a collection of tracks recorded between 2001 and 2004. Nothing matches the strength of "Sunshine," but overall it's a much more dynamic set than You Can't Stop the Bum Rush. The music is stronger throughout, like in the backgrounds of "Fight," "Get Down," and "People (Come Together)." (The latter samples A Tribe Called Quest and the 1968 Friend & Lover hit "Reach out of the Darkness.") And while LEN's lyrics don't usually progress much past the song titles as emphatics, their sentiments are certainly genuine. "I'm just freaking out 'cause I'm thinking too much," Sharon sings over the pretty strings and softly brushed percussion of "Let It Slide," and repeat collaborator Biz Markie makes a cameo, too. Other standouts: LEN remakes New Edition's "Cool It Now" as fluttery, Off the Wall-style disco, complete with strings, brass, and wah-wah guitar, and "Dante's Inferno" is a slowly bobbing instrumental that approaches acid jazz. There's some throwaway material on Diary of the Madmen, but for drawing from three years of sessions it's remarkably cohesive. It took them awhile, but LEN's sequel to "Sunshine" deserves a listen. ~ Johnny Loftus
