| | Monchy & Alexandra Hasta El Fin CD (2004)
Tonto Corazon
$11.15 Hearts throbbing and eyes moist, Monchy & Alexandra offer up their fifth record, Hasta el Fin, to the loyal and ever growing pop-bachata-loving population. Ten years previously, the rural Dominican style was barely even being recorded. In 2004, Monchy & Alexandra's most recent record went not only directly to the top of Latin music charts, but onto Billboard's Top 200, showing not only progress for this group and its emotive, romantic harmonies, but for the genre as a whole. Monchy & Alexandra can lay claim to some of the genre's most expressive, tightest harmonies. Their performances are consistently spotless. Though the layers and layers of polish that have been heaped on and buffed to a high gloss may complicate making such judgments, the vocal pair comes across as very smooth and professional. The writing can often feel trite and thin, but no more or less than anything else as unapologetically candy-pop sweet as this pair is. Scoring a few hit singles, Hasta el Fin was welcomed with open arms, staying on the charts for two years after its original release. These tunes ...

$9.05 | | Donato Wharton Trabanten CD (2004)
Tonto Corazon
$13.45 Donato Wharton proves to be a glitch-pop producer as skilled as most others in his field. Trabanten, his debut for City Centre Offices, mixes computer noise with thorny acoustic guitar licks, heavily treated keyboard melodies, found sounds, and several other elements. This all adds up to another album full of dreamy sensations that can either be left to the background or fully lived within. Rhythmically, there's a wide variety of approaches taken. "Terminus" rides in on a subdued 4/4 pulse; "Is That Why Yr Still on Earth" is tied together only by a hypnotizing hi-hat; a couple others bare a hip-hop inspiration without sounding much like the type of thing you'd expect from Prefuse 73. It's nothing special, but that hardly strips it of its charm. ~ Andy Kellman
Debut album by Donato Wharton. At the age of 18, he signed his first record contract and moved to Cologne. There, he became interested in digital music and started producing hip hop instrumentals for the up-and-coming scene of Stuttgart. Trabanten is Donato's first real solo effort -- an important move away from supporting other artists to focusing completely on his own ideas and visions. Donato, for whom Hendrix's Electric Ladyland is as important an influence as the more recent work from musicians like Vladislav Delay, Radiohead, Mogwai or jazz and hip hop in general, allows his tracks a lot of time and space to develop. He masters the more than difficult task of combining very detailed sound design with an ...
