Having taken longer than most of Gothenburg, Sweden's death metal giants to reveal their greatness, Dark Tranquility have now arguably become that ever-popular subgenre's most enduring torch-bearers -- the living embodiment of melodic death metal midway through the '00s. And, in keeping with that station, 2005's Character marks the third installment of what most agree has been the band's most consistent career-phase; one which finds them, like other genre standard-bearers before them (Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, anyone?), reveling in their mastery of a formula they know so well it inevitably begs the question: have they become too comfortable in their niche? Are they stagnating? Well, there's a distinct difference between beating a dead horse and riding it to victory every time, and Character sure feels like the latter, as song after memorable song storms by all limbs a-flailing and death-shrieks a-shrieking, their riffs and harmonies stacked as densely as only Dark Tranquility can stack them. If anything, this outing follows a slightly more straightforward and aggressive tact than its two acclaimed predecessors, using well-placed synthesizer breaks and melodies to heighten, not suffocate, the ferocious onslaught driving the nearly black metal barrage of "The New Build," the overpowering fury of "Lost to Apathy," and the brilliantly schizophrenic "Dry Run." In fact, only the rather electronics-heavy "The Endless Feed" and the especially emotive quasi-ballad "My Negation" ever manage to distract us from the dominant maelstroms raging here. Admittedly, there's probably no single perfect offering on Character on par with Haven's "Not Built to Last" or Damage Done's "Cathode Ray Sunshine," but there's also no real weak links to speak of, either -- perhaps the less-than-marvelous, "Mind Matters" and "Am I 1?" But, for all intents and purposes, what we have here is quite simply state-of-the-art melodic death metal. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Ace album, and to the idiot who considers this just " Death metal" you are wrong, it's melodic death metal, and there is a difference... I recommend this cd, I also recommend The Gallery by DT, it's also wicked. Submitted by misanthropic_hatred (powell river, bc, canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
A Monumental Album! CD UNiverse has invited me to write a short review of the album I have ordered. Well, the album was released on Tuesday January 25, and I got it on Thursday 27th, and the album is yet to leave my player.
This album is a bit heavier than 'Damage Done', a supperb production, an excellent use of electronics, with notoriously supperb riffing provided by Sundin and Henderson. Basse is powerful, almost to the point of destruction and Mikael Stanne's voice and lyrics are as passionate as always. I almost do not want him to tour so he save his voice for future albums. Every song seems to have its place in the album, it is about the things that frustrate us every day, and everything ends with a great track 'My Negation' a bit lighter, which provides a closure after 45 minutes of brutal and the most beautifull metal there is. My favorite song is 'Dry Run', another mind bogling lyrics and very powerful and passionate delivery by Mikael Stanne. There is no weak song on the album, a really monumental album...
I recomend it to all heavy metal fans... Submitted by nayoti (MIchigan, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
a rare 5 from me. killer metal this cd is really good. it could potentially be a couple times through to truly appreciate its scope but its worth it. the guitars thrash, the electro elements add mood and epicness, good deep vocals its a complete package. i would describe this cd as thrashy tech metal. Character CD music
$19.79 "Never underestimate the heart of a champion" may as well have been the unspoken moral behind Kreator's astounding return to form via 2001's Violent Revolution, following over a decade of "wilderness study" in non-thrash terrain. As well as revitalizing the band's career the album clearly helped main man Mille Petrozza make peace with his past, and set the stage for his band's wisely retro-minded direction going ...

Quite the title, and quite appropriate for this career-spanning compilation, from the band's earliest recordings in 1984 up through 1992. Unfortunately the liner notes aren't all they could be, listing the origins of some of the tracks but not all. A fair amount are true rarities, though, including cuts from EPs, rerecordings and studio jams, not to mention an unreleased cut or two. Perhaps unsurprisingly, To Mega Therion and Into the Pandemonium cuts feature prominently, though some of the more successful cuts from later albums crop up as well. Admittedly successful is where you find it -- the group's late eighties/early nineties veer towards glam and goth would have been more successful had Warrior cut out some of the cheese soloing, but the main riffcrunch usually still did the trick. Regardless, the emphasis is mostly on the doom-shadowed side of the band's work than its sometimes ...
| | Jim White Drill A Hole In That Substrate And Tell Me What You See CD (2004) Japan
Character album
$38.69 Jim White writes like a Southern gentlemen. When he released his cryptic debut, Wrong-Eyed Jesus, in 1997, he was approaching 40, and with each record his civil invective and genuine yearning for redemption have become more focused, culminating in an eccentric -- yet fully realized -- body of work that requires no aging to prove itself worthy. Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See preens like an alley cat with a bellyful of chicken scraps. The thick veil of gloss that co-producers Joe Henry and Tucker Martine use to coat each of the 11 hypnotic tracks is entirely transparent, resulting in a glass-bottom ...
