""We're faded" but not out of sight," Linda Hopper sings on the first track of Mouthfeel, her band Magnapop's first album in eight-and-a-half years. Actually, the reverse sums up Magnapop's situation pretty well: though all but the most devoted fans probably think that the band broke up years ago, now that Magnapop has returned, their sound hasn't faded at all. Aficionados of literate, energetic college rock from the early '90s will probably be excited enough to have the band back to forgive problems with Magnapop's new material, but fortunately, that's not necessary. Mouthfeel is not only one of the band's strongest collections of songs, it's also their most effortless and relaxed-sounding work since their 1992 self-titled mini-album. Instead of putting a glossy, modern-rock spin on their sound -- which undermined their previous album, Rubbing Doesn't Help -- on Mouthfeel Magnapop returns to the simply-produced, edgy power pop of Magnapop and Hot Boxing, both of which are still as fresh as they were when they first came out. Hopper and guitarist Ruthie Morris still have great chemistry, and songs like "We're Faded" and "Pretend I'm There" show that Hopper remains a distinctive voice, neither girlie-pretty nor rawk-chick tuff. "Satellite," "The In-Between" and "Think for Yourself" are fizzy but thoughtful, a distinctively Magnapop combination, while "Stick to Me" is a great example of their sweetness and punch. Magnapop's catchy, concise, unpretentious music is a far cry from most 2000s indie rock, but Mouthfeel should remind those who lost touch with the band just how good they actually are, and win over at least a few new fans as well. ~ Heather Phares

Mouthfeel album
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."

| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
Mouthfeel CD music
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted ...

| | United States Of America CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Mouthfeel songs
$13.99 Originally released on Columbia in 1968, The United States of America is one of the legendary pure psychedelic space records. Some of the harder-rocking tunes have a fun house recklessness that recalls aspects of early Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground at their freakiest; the sedate, exquisitely orchestrated ballads, especially "Cloud Song" and the wonderfully titled "Love Song for the Dead Che," are among the best relics of dreamy psychedelia. Occasionally things get too excessive and self-conscious, and the attempts at comedy are a bit flat, but otherwise this is a near classic. ~ ...
| | Bettie Serveert Attagirl CD (2005) Digipak
Mouthfeel album
$12.79 Bettie Serveert's 2003 effort Log 22 was a hailed as a comeback for the Dutch combo, a return to their 1992 indie rock masterpiece Palomine. But as 2004's Attagirl quickly makes clear, Bettie principals Carol van Dyk, Peter Visser, and Herman Bunskoeke are more about reinvention than reminiscing. Opener "Dreamaniacs" fades in on a flicker of manipulated sound, the guitars clean, and (live) percussion stuttering like something off of Everything but the Girl's Walking Wounded. Vocally, van Dyk is her usual self -- pleading, and wondering about life, but also set in her ways and a little jaded. "I don't ...
| | John Doe Forever Hasn't Happened Yet CD (2005)
Mouthfeel CD music
$13.49 Since John Doe left active duty with X, he's released a series of solo albums that, in a variety of different ways, have drawn many listeners to the same conclusion -- he's still a superb singer and a strong songwriter, but there's just something missing from his work on his own, which lacks the force and resonance of his music with X. It isn't necessarily tied to the fact that he doesn't rock as hard, given how powerful his work was with X's acoustic side project, the Knitters, and it shouldn't be a matter of not having good collaborators, as Doe's 2005 solo set, Forever Hasn't Happened Yet, boasts an impressive set of talented guests. Longtime ...
| | Mildred Bailey Blue Angel Years 1945-1947 CD (2000)
Mouthfeel music CDs
$14.39 In 1944, Mildred Bailey was getting back on track after a disastrous recording ban that held up her career as well as those of other jazz and popular music performers. Then things started going her way. Bailey was offered a radio show by CBS and, when Max Gordon opened his new Blue Angel jazz club, Bailey signed on with a trio headed by young pianist Ellis Larkins. She remained there until 1947. Baldwin Street Music has found several recordings from this period of Bailey's life, as well as a few ...
