The mid-to-late '70s were a time of immense change for The Kinks, both in musical styles and band personnel. On 1977's SLEEPWALKER, Ray Davies shed the complex arrangements of his earlier work of that decade and opted for a stripped-down quintet sound. Davies also simplified his songwriting style to accommodate more straight-ahead rock & roll.
SLEEPWALKER features the old-school Kinks signature tunes such as "Juke Box Music" and the eminently catchy title track. There are also a number of inspired slow-tempo numbers, including "Brother," a bittersweet ballad that stands up to any of Davies' best songs. The album, which contains what many consider guitarist Dave Davies' best playing, rekindled The Kinks' career in the United States. Following the success of the release, The Kinks went on to tour arenas and play for a new generation of listeners. The re-release of SLEEPWALKER also features five bonus tracks.
Recorded at Konk Studios, London, England between July and December 1976. Originally released on Arista (4106). Includes liner notes by John Swenson.
The Kinks: Ray Davies (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Dave Davies (vocals, guitar, background vocals); John Gosling (keyboards, background vocals); Andy Pyle (bass instrument); John Dalton (bass guitar); Mick Avory (drum, percussion).

Sleepwalker album
$13.65 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
MUSWELL HILLBILLIES holds a special place in the hearts of many Kinks fans, as well as the band themselves. Released in November 1971, the album has an anachronistic, rootsy quality that flew in the face of the blues-rock acts then diddling themselves all over FM radio. The unaffected, country-influenced, back-to-basics feel was similar to what the Rolling Stones attempted seven months later with EXILE ON MAIN STREET.
However, while the theme of MUSWELL HILLBILLIES was about getting back to the roots, it was Ray and Dave Davies' own roots, in London's Muswell Hill neighborhood, that inspired Ray to pen the album. As on many of the ...

At the height of British new wave, The Kinks found themselves back in vogue. Two of Ray Davies' early songs, "Stop Your Sobbing" and "David Watts" became hits for young, hungry bands (the Pretenders and the Jam, respectively). Meanwhile, Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" became an FM radio staple. Suddenly, The Kinks found themselves embraced by a new generation while also earning the praise of critics. Rolling Stone voted MISFITS one of the year's best albums.
MISFITS includes the tender, oddball hit Ray wrote for his brother, "Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy," and the bouncing pop gem "In A Foreign ...

Sleepwalker music CDs
$14.79 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
1981 found The Kinks riding high. The band was a popular concert attraction and the bulk of their work from this period was perfectly suited to the broader gestures required in arenas. Ray Davies, never a man to shy away from irony, offers an album title that sounds like a directive. But the album's first song, "Around The Dial" stares squarely into the perceived dearth of meaningful fare on the contemporary airwaves.
The album closes with one of their strongest, most evocative songs in years. "Better Things," while sounding of a piece with the rest of the album, also ...

Following the 1975 rock opera SOAP OPERA, Kinks leader Ray Davies continued to explore larger-than-rock themes. With SCHOOLBOYS IN DISGRACE, he examines the cruelty and superficiality of the British school system--a system Davies clearly suffered through.
From the piano-driven opening track "Schooldays" to the cheeky, Jan and Dean rave-up of "Jack the Idiot ...

The Kinks were still riding high on a resurgence of popularity that started in the late seventies when this 1983 release hit the streets (and was followed by GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, making for two albums in a row with covers featuring the album title spray painted on a wall). The album opens with several big-fisted guitar chord numbers, which translated perfectly to the arenas they were then playing regularly. It's also important to note that these riff-driven songs are from the band who practically wrote the book on riff-heavy songs when "You Really Got Me" came blasting out of radios seventeen years before.
The album includes a couple of hit singles--"Come Dancing" and "Don't ...
| | Duran Duran Big Thing CD (1988)
Sleepwalker CD music
$9.79 Big Thing is Duran Duran's most disappointing album, mainly because the band sounds cold and extremely isolated from their music. Both "I Don't Want Your Love" and "All She Wants Is" made it into the Top 40, but the album only climbed as high as number 24 on the charts. For Big Thing, Duran Duran chose novelty over pop conventionalism, giving "I Don't Want Your Love" a tawdry, unkempt feel that does emit droplets of pop charm, while "All She Wants Is" grinds and clanks along with a rather unfavorable tempo, which gained most of its attention because of its unorthodox style. Duran Duran was now making music apropos for seedy burlesque parlors while surrendering their pop roots, which many fans just couldn't get used to. Big Thing is short on inviting melodies, attractive rhythms, or hooks of any sort. Instead, the band opted for femme fatale lyrics and emotionless rhythms, lost in a bizarre no-man's land of danceclub pop/rock. Outside of the two singles, both "Do You Believe in Shame" (a number 30 hit in the U.K.) and "Lake Shore Driving" hold up the best, but efforts such as "Palomino," "Too Late Marlene," and the title track lack an established feel, sounding more like experiments than rock songs. Throughout the whole of Big Thing, Duran Duran seems more interested in stringing together ambiguous, unconcentrated musical utterances than creating any form of pleasurable music. ~ Mike DeGagne
