The movie based on the twisted legend of Hunter S. Thompson. Bill Murray and Peter Boyle star. Music is provided by Neil Young. Bill Murray is headed for some bad craziness in this film, portraying the off-the-wall Rolling Stone journalist Hunter S. Thompson who seems unable to keep himself on the straight and narrow path. Peter Boyle is his dangerous attorney who crucifies himself defying draconian drug sentences in court. Theatrical Release: April 24, 1980. Where The Buffalo Roam Reviews: "Murray does a fine impersonation of the good doctor's over-medicated, scattershot genius..."
-- Michael Bonner, Uncut "...[A] fascinating, highly-adept performance by Bill Murray...[He gives a] provocatively off-beat performance which rings absolutely true..."
-- Cart., Variety Where The Buffalo Roam Movie Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Ooh this is bad... This is really bad. No real storyline, just a bunch of scenes very loosely taken from HST's life (imagination!)
Bill Murray has HST's vocal system down pat for most of the movie, but seeing as he hasn't bothered to get into the character (loud clothes, a black valise & a drink in hand does not a Good Doctor make!) you sit through the film thinking 'oh it's the guy from Caddy Shack doing a good HST impersonation.
And as for Peter Boyle...Who's this Carl Lazlo? He certainly ain't no Oscar Acosta.
If you want to get the real feel of HST's life read his books or get Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.
If you want the completest works of Hunter, then defiantly buy this DVD.

I remembered it as funny I saw it as a teenager and thought it hilarious. It was not as funny as I remembered. Submitted by giddingsholmes (kansas City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Movie, But Much Better If Original I saw the original one day when I was home sick from school. I was about 14 and it was a revelation. One boring week in college, an "influenced" friend and I watched it about 10 times. At any rate, though good, what made the movie was the music. Most of the versions now have MUSIC RESCORED and the choices (described accurately as "cheesy mall music") really kill the movie. With the original soundtrack, it is a five. Without, a 3. If you can find the VHS version with a typewriter and IF it does not say Some Music Rescored, consider that you have found a real gem that should be treasured. new soundtrack??? the first releases on video were great, and when the latest dvd version was released i ran out and bought it..but after neil young's opening song the rest of the soundtrack was different(even the "lucy in the sky with diamonds"on the plane wasn't the same)..now it's not the same movie,we've tried to watch it a couple of times but haven't finished it..

The good doctor spun his best yarn yet!!! A fantastic view into the life and adventures of the late Dr. Thompson. Although it may have only been in his head, he takes us on a whirlwind journey into the heart of the underbelly of society; depicting the hell that awaits "the doomed".
