What We Do album
$14.54 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
What We Do CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" ...
| | Quincy Jones Smackwater Jack CD (1971) Import
What We Do music CDs
$15.15 Quincy Jones had jazz fans wondering when he released his killer GULA MATARI album in 1970. That set, with a gorgeous reading of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with a lead vocal by none other than Valerie Simpson, pointed quite solidly into the direction Jones was traveling: unabashedly toward pop, but with his own trademark taste and sophistication at the forefront. Its follow-up, SMACKWATER JACK, marked Jones, along with Phil Ramone and Ray Brown in the producer's chair, and knocked purist jazz fans on their heads with its killer meld of pop tunes, television and film themes, pop vocals, and big-band charts. The personnel list is a who's-who of jazzers including Monty Alexander, Jim Hall, Pete Christlieb, Joe Beck, Bobby Scott, Ernie Royal, Freddie Hubbard, Jerome Richardson, Ray Brown, Jaki Byard, Toots Thielemans, and many others. But it also hosted the talents of new school players who dug pop and soul, such as Grady Tate, Bob James, Joe Sample, Chuck Rainey, Paul Humphries, Eric Gale, and others. And yes, Simpson was back ...

What We Do music CDs
$10.09 Not fooling anyone with the questionable "Music from and inspired by..." disclaimer applied to so many of today's sad excuses for movie soundtracks, this massive, two-disc set actually represents something of a "state of heavy metal address" for the mid-'00s. Well, kinda, since, to be perfectly honest, it ostensibly works as a roster sampler for sister labels Nuclear Blast and Century Media, with a few other major metal players (the modest, but always taste-making Relapse, the dwindling but still powerful and at times relevant Roadrunner), but ignoring literally hundreds of smaller, but very active record companies pushing metal across the globe. But, seeing as it's always almost impossible to promote heavy metal outside of its limited borders and loyal fan base, any effort must be welcomed -- especially one as expansive as this one, with its whopping 36 entries. Of course that hardly means we're getting the very best from each artist, but with a laundry list including notable contributors ...
