BGO's 2004 release Another Place Another Time/She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left of Me) compiles Jerry Lee Lewis' first two country albums as a single-disc two-fer. Both albums are excellent hard country LPs, and this is a terrific way to pick them up, but consumers might want to seek out Raven's similar two-fer of Another Place Another Time/She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye, which contains the entirety of those two LPs, plus six of the 11 songs from She Still Comes Around. For fans who can only afford one two-fer of the Killer's best country albums, that's the way to go, but for collectors who want the albums in their entirety and do not want to invest in Bear Family's superb series of Jerry Lee's complete recordings, this is a good choice. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

This BGO reissue of two of Jerry Lee Lewis' Mercury albums catches the Killer in his prime. While it's true that many had forsaken the rock & roll iconoclast as just plain weird, the U.K., Europe, and many of the music's critics hadn't -- and thank God. These two albums, issued in 1971 and 1972, respectively -- though some of the tunes were recorded as early as 1960 -- are a pair of his finest. Check his reading of "C.C. Rider" (done in true Nashville/countrypolitan style), the piano boogie version of Joe South's "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," and a smokin' version of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'," just to name very few. This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career.
