Whenever the proverbial Next Big Thing rolls around, it usually takes a few different bands to push the style into the mainstream. With grunge, Nirvana lit the spark, but it was Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots who convinced everyone the Seattle sound was no fluke. In the case of the New Rock phenomenon, the Strokes brought style and the White Stripes added artiness, but with GET BORN, Jet put all the pieces together.
Perhaps the first band of the genre to completely absorb and effectively reconfigure classic rock & roll influences without a trace of winking irony, Jet not only swaggers like the Stones and pouts like Iggy Pop, but injects sorely needed doses of romanticism and variety into a style that otherwise often seems perilously close to oldies revivalism. The most immediate difference between the Australian foursome and their shaggy-haired brethren is the band's talent for soaring sad songs. On the gorgeous "Look What You've Done" and "Radio Song," Jet proves that trashy guitars and neo-garage sneering are not the only way to rock, in the process satisfying both fans of piano-driven ballads and the much edgier NYC sound.

Get Born
$19.59 Disc 1 of this 2-CD set is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Following a successful collaboration at a 1999 London benefit show, it made perfect sense for Jimmy Page to invite the Black Crowes to be his back-up band for a mini-tour later that year. Recorded during a pair of sold-out shows at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre, these sets are dominated by Led Zeppelin tunes, along with a mix of classic blues nuggets and covers of Fleetwood Mac and Page's first group, The Yardbirds. (Due to contractual obligations, no Crowes songs are included here).
Chris Robinson's soulful singing ably fills in for Robert Plant's caterwaul, particularly with the sinister "In My Time of Dying" and the bluesy drawl of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me." Guitarists Rich Robinson and Audley ...

| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Get Born
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with the majority of songs surpassing the four-minute mark. But Stamey uses his production savvy ...

| | Nirvana To Markos III CD (2003) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Get Born
$11.99 Available in this U.K. import edition, Nirvana's third album TO MARKOS III includes "The World is Cold Without You" and "Love Suite."
Nirvana's third and final album for Island (sometimes titled Dedicated to Markos III in discographies) was extremely rare in its first 1969 LP issue, the U.K. release limited to a few hundred promo copies. The group's cutesiness was toned down considerably for this LP, though they were still offering the kind of light orchestrated pop-rock that they had on their previous Island records, with some jazz and classical influences. It's a more mature product than their first two albums, but a little tired-sounding, and lacking in the more psychedelic ambition that produced some of their best songs, like "Rainbow Chaser" and "I Believe in Magic." In fact they sometimes sound rather like film composers or pop-jazz-vocals singer/songwriters caught in a different era, what with the rather grandiose (and certainly grandiosely arranged) Euro-romantic sweep of most of their songs. Although the orchestration, often combining strings with harpsichord, ...
