This sci-fi/action fim stars Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. DVD special features include featurettes on the film's special effects, animation, deleted scenes, a gag reel, more. In writer-director Kerry Conran's debut film, ace pilot Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law) reluctantly teams up with his former flame, journalist Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), to uncover the mystery behind a group of missing scientists and a series of shocking robot attacks. Aided by gadgetry whiz Dex Dearborn (Giovanni Ribisi) and enigmatic military commander Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), Joe and Polly must find out who is responsible for an increasingly elaborate scheme that may trigger the end of the world.
A highly stylized, mostly computer-generated spectacle, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW is a striking cinematic achievement. Steeped in the marvelous visuals of 1930s pop culture, Conran's movie is a loving tribute to that era, featuring clever nods to FLASH GORDON, BUCK ROGERS, and other adventure serials of the time. Beginning in a gloriously slate-gray, towering New York City, this movie follows its heroes from one intriguing locale to the next. Although the remarkable images of the film threaten to eclipse the characters at times, SKY CAPTAIN is very well cast, with the actors pitch-perfect for their respective roles, particularly the luminous Paltrow and the brainy Ribisi. And yet the stunning retro-futuristic design is always at the fore, making for a wonderfully unique movie. Theatrical Release: September 17, 2004. Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow Video Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow Movie Review Average Rating: (3.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews GREAT MOVIE, BUT NOT FOR THE AVERAGE ACTION-MOVIE FAN some might say there's overacting and exaggeration, in my opinion those are evidently intentional and required: this is a movie that tries to re-create the 40's (?) atmosphere (visually and technologically).
imagine something that mixes Indiana Jones, Hellboy (not in equal parts)a hint of James Bond, and H.G. Wells and you'll get the idea ;)
in my opinion just by the visuals it's worth to see. Submitted by t4d30 (Barren Gardens, MEXICO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Go For The Eye Candy When you pick up a DVD like this, it isn't for great art. It's for action, maybe some plot, and a lot of eye candy. Sky Cap'n delivers all of these, so I was pretty happy. I was also happy about the "no great art" part, because I like Movies not Films. Submitted by Steve (Oceanside, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
disappointing The premise had promise, but the actors / actresses were all wrong (except for Dix). The computer-generated world seemed to lack detail (granted, I'm spoiled by Matrix), althought the robots were kinda cool. It was ok to watch once, but I wish I had borrowed it from the library, or better yet, waited for it to be on cable. Save your money for something else. Corny Sci-Fi Flick Bad from the first scene, this film's special effects do not live up to the hype. Worse still, the plot seriously lacks any surprise or originality. Even as a parody of this genre, this film fails. A waste of time and money to buy on DVD. Submitted by Jumba (Chicago) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.29 The second and final volume in Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL series is another stylish, sprawling masterwork. VOLUME 2 picks up where the first film left off, as The Bride (Uma Thurman) resumes her quest to track down her former mentor, Bill (David Carradine), and exact revenge. But before she gets to Bill, she must first take out the remaining minions who helped to slaughter her best friends and fiancé. First up is Budd (Michael Madsen), a quiet but dangerous country boy who lives in a trailer. Next is Elle Driver (Darryl Hannah), a one-eyed vixen who doesn't appear to have a heart--or a conscience. As The Bride makes her way closer to Bill, scenes from her past are revisited, including her training with the angry and brutal Pai Mei (Gordon Liu). Finally, The Bride locates her man, sparking a truly unforgettable confrontation.
In contrast to the nearly dialogue-free first volume, VOLUME ...
