El Destino Jugo Sus Cartas album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.

| | Jencarlos Buscame CD (2009)
El Destino Jugo Sus Cartas CD music
$10.20 Telemundo TV star Jencarlos Canela became the hot topic of the Latin music world when his debut album, Búscame, entered the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart at number two. Canela -- who goes by his first name only -- is the star of his own telenovela (soap opera) on Telemundo. The album's first single, "Amor Quédate," was featured on the television program a month before the album's release, and was the subject of a prime-time push by the network. According to Billboard, 62 percent of the album's first-week sales came from Puerto Rico. The brisk sales of the set propelled it into the top half of the Billboard Top 200 chart as well. Musically, the set is standard Latin pop, but it kicks off with with the rocker "Nadie Como Yo," which features blazing distorted guitars, a piano worthy of the E Street Band, and a cut-time snare and kick drum beat that make it a solid anthemic pop/rocker with a refrain reminiscent of Juanés. The title track, with its popping ...

$11.95 Their 2005 debut album stayed at number one in the Billboard World Music Chart for a record-breaking 68 weeks, and they won over the world with their breathtaking harmonies and exciting live shows. To follow up on this success, Máiréad, Méav, Orla, Lisa, and Chloe went into the studio to record a collection of classic Christmas songs (including "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," and "The Little Drummer Boy") sung with an extra dollop of poignancy and good humor.

El Destino Jugo Sus Cartas music CDs
$9.69 The greatest hits of this multi-talented Puerto Rican singer/actor, who, in the grand tradition of many of his fellow Latin superstars is also a well-known soap opera actor, cover many styles from urban funk through pop disco to heartfelt ballads. With his heartthrob good looks, Chayanne is obviously a candidate to follow in the steps of Enrique Iglesias, and with a back catalog such as this it's hard to see how he could fail. From the slinky "Y Tu Te Vas" to the upbeat dance rhythms of "Torero" and the salsa-inflected "Salome," Chayanne doesn't let up for a minute in his multi-faceted pop approach, even taking a stab at rock in "Fiesta En America." But he's understandably most at home with songs such as the upbeat, Latin-based "Tu Pirata ...
| | Mary Lou Williams Live At The Keystone Korner CD (2002)
El Destino Jugo Sus Cartas songs
$13.85 This fine trio set by pianist Mary Lou Williams (with bassist Larry Gales and drummer Eddie Marshall) was not released for the first time until 25 years after its recording. Williams' career lasted from the 1920s until her death in 1981. She starts off this live performance by saying that she is going to do a history of jazz, and she does cover several vintage styles in a medley (spirituals, blues, stride, boogie-woogie, and swing), but does not get past 1940. However, some of the individual songs explored at greater length are boppish and hint at later developments, even though there is nothing here that's all that avant-garde. The fact that 50 years after she first recorded Mary Lou Williams still sounded fairly modern was remarkable and she is in excellent form throughout this valuable recording. ~ Scott Yanow
