The bluesy, distinctively hefty tenor sound of saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman has graced many recordings by many artists, but playing with Ray Charles during the 1950s and '60s is where he made a name for himself. Since then, Newman recorded numerous albums on his own, some leaning more towards jazz, others towards R&B. This versatility enables Newman to create an ideal homage to Charles, one of the most eclectic and revered musical figures in American history.
I REMEMBER BROTHER RAY is a set of heartfelt, slightly bittersweet jazz renditions of classic songs from Charles's repertoire. For "Georgia on My Mind," Newman's smooth-yet-robust tone gently caresses the melody, taking it on the dance floor for an elegant, affectionate waltz. The lovely, languid ballad "Ruby" nods towards the melody of "God Bless the Child," and features solos from vibes player Steve Nelson and pianist John Hicks, where their notes shimmer like raindrops suspended in mid-air. Accentuating the wistful, romantic, after-hours side of Charles's and Newman's musical personalities, I REMEMBER BROTHER RAY is late-night jazz balladry of the highest order.

I Remember Brother Ray
$14.29 At the age of 70, veteran tenor saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman is in prime form throughout this well-rounded set. He jams bebop on Charlie Parker's "Visa," shows off his large tone on the ballads "Time After Time" and "When I Fall in Love," romps on the boogaloo "Shakabu," pays tribute to his former boss Herbie Mann on "Passing Through," and plays flute quite expertly on "Song for the New Man." Also quite worthy are a pair of Newman's newer songs, "Fast Lane" and "Lonesome Head." ...
| | Eric Alexander Dead Center CD (2004)
I Remember Brother Ray
$13.85 Recalling the moody and atmospheric mid-to-late-'60s work of fellow reedmen Wayne Shorter and Hank Mobley, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander's Dead Center has a reflective quality that lends itself to such timely compositions as McCoy Tyner's "Search for Peace." It also reveals Alexander's lithe ...
| | Houston Person To Etta With Love CD (2004)
I Remember Brother Ray
$13.45 One of the longest-lasting and critically lauded partnerships in jazz, the duo of vocalist Etta Jones and tenor saxophonist Houston Person ran from a concert in 1968 to Jones' death in 2001 on the same day their last album together, Etta Jones Sings Lady Day, was released. In tribute to Jones, To Etta With Love finds Person digging into various standards that Jones loved throughout her career. There is a melancholy, heartbreaking quality to these tracks. The fact that liner notes are included on an album without a vocalist only serves to further underline ...

| | Tony Williams Ego CD (1970)
I Remember Brother Ray
$12.35 Easily the weirdest record the Tony Williams Lifetime ever released, 1970's Ego is an experimental blend of post-hard bop jazz and the spacier end of psychedelic rock. Larry Young's wafting organ parts and Ted Dunbar's rockist guitar (as opposed to the more traditional jazz bent of the guy he replaced, John McLaughin) combine to make parts of the album sound like Atom Heart Mother-era Pink Floyd, particularly on "There Comes a Time" and "Lonesome Wells (Gwendy Trio)." Unfortunately, both of those tracks are bogged down by vocals (by Williams and Jack Bruce, respectively) singing Williams' own earnest and not terribly inspired verse. The best tracks are those that dispense with the lyrical claptrap -- the liner notes are also a terribly dated hoot -- and get down to the creation of some roiling atmospheres and powerful group improvisation. In that regard, things really pick up at the end, with the ghostly "Mom and Dad" and the cacophonous closer "Urchins of Shermese," on which Williams splits the narcoleptic mood of the introduction with some of his most fractured and arrhythmic fills ever, while ...
