Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra: Ted Nash, Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson (saxophone); Carlos Henríquez (bass instrument); Eric Lewis, Herlin Riley, Joe Temperley, Lew Soloff, Marcus Printup, Ron Westray, Ryan Kisor, Victor Goines, Wynton Marsalis, Walter Blanding, Vincent Gardner, Andre Hayward. Personnel: Anderson "Warmdaddy" Wessell, Joe Temperley, Victor Goines, Walter Blanding (saxophone); Lew Soloff, Marcus Printup, Ryan Kisor, Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Ron Westray, Vincent Gardner, Andre Hayward (trombone); Eric Lewis (piano); Herlin Riley (drums). Audio Mixer: Patrick Smith . Liner Note Author: Stanley Crouch. Recording information: Right Track Studio A509 (08/26/2003). Photographers: Frank Stewart; Chuck Stewart. Arranger: Wynton Marsalis. Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. But Wynton Marsalis ambitiously dove into scoring it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for this Palmetto CD. The results are rather uneven. In spite of the best efforts of the participating musicians, the solos often prove to be a distraction, leaning more toward humor than sticking to Coltrane's message. The most ridiculous section occurs in the opening movement, "Acknowledgement," when the baton is passed from one player to the next as they take turns playing the brief cadence of the well-known A Love Supreme vamp, which quickly grows tedious. "Resolution" works somewhat better, though there are sections which sound as if more rehearsal time was needed. Drummer Herlin Riley makes a strong effort with the transitional solo into "Pursuance," but his work pales next to that of Elvin Jones on the original album. "Psalm" comes the closest to achieving what Coltrane might have envisioned had he chosen to record his suite with an orchestra. One noticeable improvement is the omission of the vocal chant included by Coltrane. In any case, die-hard fans of Marsalis will want to pick up this CD, while others should consider themselves forewarned of the potential for disappointment. ~ Ken Dryden

Love Supreme
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken ...

| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Love Supreme
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made ...
