W/Xavier Davis,Piano/Dwayne Burno,Bass/Gene Jackson,Drums
Personnel: Randy Johnston (guitar); Randy Johnston; Dwayne Burno (double bass); Xavier Davis (piano); Gene Jackson (drums). Liner Note Author: Jim Fisch. Recording information: Acoustic Recording, Brooklyn, NY (07/15/2004). Photographer: R. Andrew Lepley. An excellent modern mainstream guitarist, Randy Johnston is heard in top form throughout this straight-ahead trio/quartet set. Johnston is joined by bassist Dwayne Burno, drummer Gene Jackson, and (on five of the ten selections) pianist Xavier Davis. While he sometimes recalls Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, and Wes Montgomery, Johnston has his own sound within the jazz tradition. The up-tempo piece "The Jump Back," one of his three originals, is a high point as are his interpretations of such standards as "Careless Love," a swinging "I Never Knew," and a tasteful ballad rendition of "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)." Randy Johnston's fourth recording for the High Note label is one of his best, showing that he is one of the major underrated talents of straight-ahead jazz guitar. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Is It You?
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel ...

$12.09 and his orchestra inc. Thelma Carpenter, Lester Young, Jimmy Powell +
Personnel includes: Count Basie (leader, piano); Jimmy Rushing, Thelma Carpenter (vocals); Earle Warren, James Powell, Rudy Rutherford, Eli Thompson (reeds); Ed Lewis, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Al Killian, Joe Newman (trumpet); Eli Robinson, Ted Donnelly, Lou Taylor, Dicky Wells (trombone); Artie Shaw (clarinet); Freddie Green (guitar); Rodney Richardson (bass); Shad Wilson (drums). Includes liner notes by Dave Dexter, Jr. Digitally remastered by John Jungklaus. Recorded live at The Hotel Lincoln, New York, New York. Given the paucity of Basie recordings from the 1940s issued by his own label, the quality and content of this collection of 14 songs cut exclusively for radio in 1944 is scandalously good. The tracks, ...
