Personnel: Orrin Evans (piano); Byron Landham (drums). Recording information: Alemeda Studios; Red Rock Studios. Photographer: Andrea Bucci. Déjà Vu is a reissue of a disc originally released in 1995 as The Trio, featuring Orrin Evans on piano, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Byron Landham on drums. Great playing abounds on this early session. Its interest is heightened by the appearance of several pieces that Evans would go on to record on his later Criss Cross albums: "Explain It to Me," "Dorm Life," "Big Jimmy," and Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning." The opening "I Want to Be Happy," played in a straight-ahead, lilting 3/4, is quite different from the daring treatment the standard would receive five or so years later on Evans' Listen to the Band. Previously unheard Evans originals also appear, such as "Monroe" and "5-4-94," the latter a solo piano feature. The showstopper is an extended, medium-swing reading of Cole Porter's "I Love You." Now that Evans has established himself as a pianist to be reckoned with, Déjà Vu provides a timely look back. ~ David R. Adler

Deja Vu
$13.79 This is a live concert recording of Dizzy and Bird from Town Hall not previously known to have been recorded. With audio restoration by Ted Kendell, the sound is excellent. This is a discovered recording of Dizzy and Bird at bebop's inception - the equiv
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Dizzy Gillespie; Curly Russell (double bass); Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Don Byas (tenor saxophone); Al Haig (piano); Max Roach, Big Sid Catlett (drums). Liner Note Authors: Robert E. Sunenblick M.D.; Ted Kendall; Ira Gitler. Recording information: Town Hall, New York, NY (06/22/1945). Photographer: Charles B. Nadell. The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, ...

| | Steve Turre Rainbow People CD (2008)
Deja Vu
$13.65 Personnel: Steve Turre (trombone, percussion); Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone); Sean Jones (trumpet); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Peter Washington (upright bass); Ignacio Berroa (drums, percussion). On 2008's RAINBOW PEOPLE, veteran jazz trombonist Steve Turre leads an impressive ensemble that includes pianist Mulgrew Miller, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and bassist Peter Washington. Standout tracks on this vibrant set include "Brother Ray," a bluesy number that nods to one of Turre's mentors, Ray Charles, and the Spanish-tinged "Midnight in Madrid." High Note Records has been on a roll in 2008. Larry Willis and David "Fathead" Newman have both issued near career-defining statements on the label in 2008 -- and that's just naming two. To this illustrious duo add trombonist and composer Steve Turre, whose Rainbow People album -- his self-produced third release for the imprint -- may be the finest offering of his career as a leader. Turre surrounds himself with likeminded musicians he's played with in various ensembles through the years: drummer Ignacio Berroa, who worked with Turre in Dizzy Gillespie's ...
