| Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) They Don't Make Music Like This Anymore Naked City is sometimes classified as a jazz/rock group. But this is far too simplistic a categorization for this ensemble. Even the term "avant garde" doesn't really tell much for the person who hasn't experienced the music. (And as former SNL writer Anne Beatts is said to have commented, one can be avant garde for only so long before becoming garde).
John Zorn is the primary mover behind Naked City. He has since moved on to other projects. His work in the orchestral, jazz, rock and other medium (notably his "game pieces") make Frank Zappa look like a stodgy conservative. Naked City is a good place to start if one is interested in his endlessly inventive musical offerings.
While this box set may seem a hefty investment for the uninitiated, it really is the only way to experience this band. Jazz, rock, hardcore punk, surf music and yes, even some C&W influences are manifested. Some of the songs last less than a minute, and the rapid change of time signatures is stunning.
Some of the music is not easy to listen to or appreciate. It make take a few tries as well as some concentrated listening, but it is well worth the effort.
Some of the photographic representations of violence and S&M are profoundly disturbing -- as is some of the music. I junked the box and kept the discs for this reason.
Notwithstanding this, Zorn is a composer/musician of tremendous talent, and Naked City involved musicians of great skill and depth. Forget your fears; forget these reviews; and check out this music. It is an infinitely rewarding experience. Submitted by Mark (Washington, DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
John Zorn's Most Ambitious Project Realized Unless you are really into the avant garde, this box set may be overkill for you. You may just want to purchase self-titled cd or Grand Guignol.
However, being a Zorn fan for many, many years, I loved having all of Naked City in one box set. The production is top rate. This one's a keeper Submitted by salaljurf6 (Alexandria, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
