Piano Rolls & Discs / D'Albert, Carreño
$8.89 Original score by Marty Stewart, Kristin Wilkinson, Larry Paxton.
Sure, the movie was no Sling Blade, even if directed by the one and only Billy Bob Thornton. But let's face it, they took two hours outta the thing! All the griping aside, the score, composed and performed by country music renaissance man Marty Stuart -- and his collaborating band members Kristin Wilkinson and Larry Paxton -- is something else completely. Comprised of 23 tracks, Stuart's score does sound like soundtrack music, but no matter. He and his sextet have taken the drama of the film's text and created an aural theater of the American West. At the heart of each theme is a core of mandolin, viola, bass, guitar, accordion, piano, and percussion. Orchestrations ride ambiently in the background, highlighting tension and drama. In "Edge of the World," cornets play at the music's outermost edge, hinting at a red Sonoran sunset. In another place, guitars, both strummed and soloed upon, create an impressionistic picture of a campfire jam session. Elsewhere, "Strawberry Tango, Part One and Two" features a full horn and string section painting the atmosphere at a cantina dance from its wild beginnings until its sultry ending. Daniel Lanois, who scored Thornton's Sling Blade (well, it actually sounds as if he threw a bunch of leftover studio bits on a tape for the movie), makes a ...

Piano Rolls & Discs / D'Albert, Carreño
$11.39 With EDEN, Broadway diva Sarah Brightman ("Requiem," "Cats") stretches beyond the constraints of what's considered show music. Here, she sings an assortment of classical adaptations, rock, and sleek modern pop songs.
The entrancing opener, "In Paradisum" combines pre-recorded nature sounds, atmospheric textures, and echoes of Gregorian chant, setting the regal and eclectic mood. "Nella Fantasia" is an adaptation of a tune by movie soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone, with Italian lyrics by Ferrau, and here ...

Piano Rolls & Discs / D'Albert, Carreño
$5.69 Though hardly a greatest-hits package, this CD offers up interesting asides from Billie Holiday's storied career. All are quality tracks, but many are more obscure numbers, some that showcase a lighthearted Lady Day, especially "Getting Some Fun Out of Life" and "The Moon Looks Down and Laughs." The prime cuts are the title selection, "They Can't Take That Away from Me," and "Mean to Me," while the remainder reminds us how Holiday was able to take any tune and make it her own. It seems now like there are more collections of her works released than original albums -- this one is in the middle of the pack. ~ Michael G. Nastos
This collection of Billie Holiday recordings was issued on CD in 1981. It contains Holiday at the height of her powers when she was recording for Columbia in the late '30s and '40s. That said, most of the tunes here will be unfamiliar to the general listener, and overly familiar to the connoisseur. Even for the price, it's worth skipping this comp. ~ Thom Jurek
This budget compilation seems determined to counter Billie Holiday's image as a mournful singer by choosing 12 selections from her Brunswick and Vocalion sessions of the 1930s that emphasize her talents for uptempo swing music. Half the tracks are drawn from recordings credited to Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra, half to Billie Holiday and Her Orchestra, but in practice all are hot, small-band recordings on which Holiday generally ...

$17.29 Brian P. Gillett was born in 1972 in Marietta, GA. He is a self taught composer and pianist. His talent as a composer surfaced by necessity while an adolescent when he overzealously scheduled too many piano performances for the same retirement community. With multiple performances programmed and a limited piano repertoire, his adeptness for improvisation and composition surfaced trial-by-fire.While a student at Oberlin College, he continued formal training in piano performance, but his development as a composer remained self-directed. During this time, he performed original works and improvisations for solo piano at various venues throughout the East coast. Concealing a small clock in the piano's performer side ledge, he secretly improvised, at times, entire concerts. After establishing credibility as a solo performer and composer, he revealed the improvisatory nature of his performances and continued explicitly performing piano improvisation. His facility with extemporization colored his development as a composer, and an improvisatory character underlies even his most structured compositions.During his studies at Oberlin, he developed an interest in the Biologic Sciences. In 1995, he enrolled in McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal, PQ. Drawing from his experiences in the hospitals of Montreal, he composed works for voice, electronic ...
