Although Byron Lee's music generally consists of generic easy listening versions of Jamaican and international pop hits, his impact on the music scene in Jamaica will always be huge, if for no other reason than the studio he built and owns in Kingston, Dynamic Sounds. Lee formed his Dragonaires in 1956, and his sound has gone through the usual stages of Jamaican pop, from ska to reggae to the softest dancehall you'll ever hear, and while it is easy to criticize his elevator music approach to things, his musicians -- and the horn sections in particular -- have always been top-notch. This album offers nothing even close to startling, consisting of mellow, predictable arrangements of songs like "Can't Help Falling in Love" and Irving Burgie's "Jamaica Farewell," with only the concluding track, "Golden Times of the 60's," showing anything resembling spunk. ~ Steve Leggett

| | Best Of Bob Welch CD (1991)
Soft Lee, Vol. 8 songs
$9.09 Bob Welch has had an interesting, yet arguably frustrating career. The singer, songwriter, and guitarist spent five years and five albums with Fleetwood Mac in the early 1970s and left just before the band became a superstar act. The 1991 Rhino compilation The Best of Bob Welch collects the highlights of his work from 1976 to 1991. Welch's creative prime resulted in two calculated, meticulously crafted, consciously commercial pop/rock albums for Capitol Records: 1977's French Kiss and 1979's Three Hearts. All of Welch's big and modest hits from these records are included: "Sentimental Lady" (a re-recording of a song he'd previously cut with Fleetwood Mac), "Hot Love, Cold World," "Ebony Eyes," "Precious Love," and "Church." The haunting Three Hearts album cut "The Ghost of Flight 401" is featured too. Four songs from the two 1976 albums recorded by Welch's ...

Soft Lee, Vol. 8 CD music
$10.15 Includes instrumental dub remixes of songs from Israel Vibration's JERICHO and PAY THE PIPER albums.
For nearly 25 years now, Israel Vibration has been one of the most beloved bands in reggae, not only for their conscious lyrics and heavenly harmonies, but also for their strength in remaining positive in the face of adversity after being stricken with polio as children. Coming on the heels of last year's wonderful boxed set, The Power of the Trinity, Dub Combo features instrumental remixes of songs from the band's last two albums, Jericho and Pay the Piper, and although hardly essential for casual reggae fans, it is a fine bit of heady dub for Israel Vibration devotees. The best reason to buy it is the Roots Radics, reggae's ...

| | Fe-Mail Syklubb Fra Halvete CD (2003)
Soft Lee, Vol. 8 songs
$11.85 Together, Maja Ratkje and Hild Sofie Tafjord represent the electronic half of the all-female improv quartet Spunk -- even though the former is also a singer and the latter plays French horn, among other instruments. Their duo, Fe-Mail, could be described as a female answer to Jazzkammer. Besides Norwegian origins, the two units share a taste for noise constructions and a subtle, dry sense of humor. Syklubb fra Haelvete is released by the label TV5 as a pink-colored vinyl LP. The calendar-type swimsuit picture on the cover offers another example of Ratkje's fondness for mischievous misleading and contrasts. If anything, the seductive, over-feminine photograph doesn't prepare you for the aural assault it wraps up. The pair produces harsh noise out of samplers and electronics, adding occasional voice, harmonica, and miscellaneous acoustic instruments whenever they feel like it. "Modogin" and "Water Music" feature rare vocals from Ratkje. The latter track is the LP's highlight; relatively quiet, ...
