In the 1980s, as his career was virtually extinguished in the U.S., Elliott Murphy became a headliner in Europe, an unusual occurrence if only because his wordy songs would have seemed to have too many nuances to be appreciated fully to those for whom English is a second language. In part, though, it was Murphy's live shows that built his following, and his first live album, not released in the U.S., helps show how. This hour-long performance, which was recorded live at the Hot Point Festival in Lausanne, Switzerland, on June 17, 1989, finds Murphy with his regular rhythm section of Ernie Brooks (bass) and Tony Machine (drums), plus keyboard player Art Labriola, and "special guest" guitarist Chris Spedding, who takes over mid-set for a couple of his own numbers. Murphy cherry-picks the best songs from his back catalog, going back to 1973's Aquashow ("The Last of the Rock Stars") and 1977's Just a Story from America (the title track and "Drive All Night"), as well as including more recent compositions. Since Murphy's writing and performing style hasn't changed much over the years, the material is consistent, and the album serves as a live "best of." ~ William Ruhlmann
Probably the best live album of a true and authentic rock legend! Recorded live at the Hot Point Festival (Switzerland) in 1989. Special guests include Chris Spedding. Last Call digipak reissue. 2004. Elliott Murphy Live Hot Point Songs | 1. | You Never Know What You're in For - (studio) |

$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Live Hot Point CD music
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around ...
| | Black Ivory Don't Turn Around CD (1972)
Live Hot Point music CDs
$9.79 This New York City group attained a strong following in the '70s and were one of the best falsetto-led groups proficient in ballads. This 1993 set compiles tracks from their first two albums, both released in 1972. Unlike the Phil Perry-led Montclairs, who often seemed on the verge of nervous collapse, Black Ivory were a little more poised and polished. Despite the level of skill of Leroy Burgess' falsetto, and the close harmonies of Stuart Bascombe and Russell Patterson, the group was patently hit or miss. "Don't Turn Around" and "Time Is Love" both exemplify the sweetness and haunting sound of the group. The phenomenal self-pity classic "I'll Find a Way" has the great and funny lyric "I'm the loneliest man in town." Not surprisingly, this has its fair share of duds. Tracks "Wishful Thinking," "Loveland," and "I Keep Asking You Questions" are well sung but faceless. The odd "Our Future" doesn't even feature singing, but "supercool" conversation that was an unfortunate given for most R&B groups in the early '70s. For fans, all of these songs and more are known, but this set also includes something different. The group's best-known song, "You & I," shows up here in a newer version with telltale late-'80s synths. While not as strong as the original, it won't make a fan snap the CD in two. Like many '90s Golden Classics releases, this isn't a greatest-hits collection but rather one of individual album efforts. Regardless what the title is, this is worth picking up. ~ Jason Elias
