(1 Customer Review)
One of the great homemade masterpieces of the 1970s, George Brigman's JUNGLE ROT is the sound of youthful hero worship gone gleefully off the deep end. Conceived as a tribute to British psych-blues band the Groundhogs and their leader Tony McPhee, the album takes that bands' acid-fried boogie and warps it with primitive recoding techniques and the fevered isolation in which Brigman worked. The title track alone with its fuzz-damaged guitar pan and punishing four-on-the-floor rhythms is worth the price of admission, yet the rest of the album delivers equally inspired wallops of technical brilliance and blown-out acid shred. While Brigman continued to hone his chops in the ensuing decades, he did so once again in relative anonymity. In the mean time, JUNGLE ROT became a collectors' sensation, finally receiving an official reissue in 2005.
Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, Brigman and accomplices Jeff Barett and Ron Collier deliver an album of pounding Stooges-like punk which assaults the ear from beginning to end. The album is a private pressing which appeared on the Solid label in 1975. Another rare album given the Radioactive treatment. 2004.Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The music is as advertised: gutbucket 1975 energy crisis blues, awash in FX and teenage hormones. Jungle Rot album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense that, like a great improv troupe, the trio freaked out then retained the best moments, trimming away the indulgence ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Jungle Rot CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. ...

| | Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!: In Concert CDs (1970) With Book; With DVD; Anniversary Edition; Limited Edition
Jungle Rot album
$49.49 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain."
Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The pièce-de-resistance of what is arguably the best live Rolling Stones recording is the eight-minute-plus reading of "Midnight ...

| | Skeeter Davis 40th Anniversary: Keep On Running CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Jungle Rot songs
$15.59 This 20-track release of songs by country and pop legend Skeeter Davis features recordings made between 1964 and 1975, including "Dimples," "Keep On Running," and "Looking Back."
Released to roughly coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Spencer Davis Group's birth, this is a rather eccentric collection of odds and ends from 1965-74. Although half of the 20 tracks do indeed date from the time in which the lineup featured Stevie Winwood, there's a big catch: all of those songs (none of them previously unreleased) are live or radio session performances, not studio performances. The remainder of the CD is assembled from various studio recordings from post-Winwood lineups, and while the 1967-68 tracks from this portion aren't bad at all, there's a big downturn into ho-hum '70s rock for the final four numbers, all taken from 1973's Gluggo, and 1974's Living on a Back Street. So, it's not even quite the best of everything the band did besides their studio recordings with the Winwood lineup. Mind you, the live and radio recordings with Winwood are good, including versions of the hits "Keep on Running," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man." But all of the Winwood tracks have been issued on RPM's Mojo Rhythms & Midnight Blues ...
