| | Mix Master Mike Bangzilla CD - Import Mix Master Mike Discography of CDs
It's not that Mix Master Mike's Bangzilla isn't exciting; it is. The turntable master throws plenty of wild sounds at the listener, the pace is hectic throughout, and if you don't giggle at any of the numerous quirky samples you're probably the sour type. Problem is, Bangzilla is missing that something extra for all those who don't worship at the altar of his usual crew -- the Beastie Boys -- or those who don't own a ton of vinyl with words like "breaks" or "beats" on the covers. Bangzilla sounds like one of those waiting-for-the-rappers albums for the most part, and only occasionally breaks out a fully formed track. "Full Range Earmuff," "The Joust," and the smoking title track have definite direction, and while everything else displays Mike's wicked way of working the deck, non-DJ listeners are going to grow tired of the theatrics for theatrics sake pretty darn quick. As a demo for his nimble-fingered abilities, Bangzilla works. As an album to return to repeatedly, it falls short. ~ David Jeffries
Japanese pressing of the rap act's 2004 album includes one exclusive bonus track 'The I Micronaut'. Rush.Uncut (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Mashing up break beats with scratched soundtracks and sampled sci-fi dialogue, BANGZILLA has a tongue-in-cheek air of MARS ATTACKS! comedy." The Wire (p.68) - "'Magnet' hops a fast tempo, grabs a ghoulish bassline and leaves the scratching for melting....'Blow Dart' is a nice rickety one - feedback, funk keyboards, symphonic tympanis - that could be about aliens attacking Earth..." | | Michael Jackson Bad CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Bangzilla CD music
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Regardless of his press, history clearly shows that he has made a lot of people very, very happy.

| | Silky Soul Music: An All-Star Tribute To Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly CD (2009)
Bangzilla music CDs
$10.19 A San Francisco-based smooth R&B act with roots in Philadelphia soul, Maze (usually billed as Maze featuring Frankie Beverly) never managed to break with a larger mainstream audience during their late-`70s to early `80s peak, but nevertheless garnered a devoted following in urban radio as one of the progenitors of the romantic, understated style known as "quiet storm." And the group's jazz-funk sophistication can certainly ...

| | Platters All-Time Greatest Hits CD (2004) Remastered
Bangzilla album
$11.99 Recorded between 1956 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Fred Bronson.
While this single-disc distillation of the Platters' biggest hits is superb, it's almost identical to Rhino's 1998 comp Enchanted: The Best of the Platters, except that the Rhino disc actually has everything here plus three additional tracks. None of those three extra songs are among the group's more familiar numbers, though, so in all honesty All-Time Greatest Hits will be just as sufficient for most fans. It has all 15 of their first Top Forty hits, an astonishing run that went ...

| | Louvin Brothers Tragic Songs Of Life/Satan Is Real CD (2007) Reissued
Bangzilla songs
$16.19 If the Louvin Brothers weren't the greatest harmony duo in the history of country music, their serious rivals were few and far between, and their best recordings are among the most emotionally resonant in American roots music. The Louvin Brothers also had a talent for concept albums that was unusual among country acts in the '50s and early '60s, and two of their very best LPs have been paired up on a single CD from the Australian Raven label. 1956's Tragic Songs of Life certainly lived up to its title, featuring classic murder ballads such as "The Knoxville Girl" and "Mary of the Wild Moor" side by side with more contemporary tales of heartbreak and poor fortune like "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" and "What Is Home Without Love." While these songs could be pure bathos in less skillful hands, Ira and Charlie's crystalline harmonies and unforced sincerity find a rich vein of compassion in this music, and Ira's superb mandolin solos add to the eloquence of the melodies. 1960's Satan Is Real raises the stakes on the passion and force of Tragic Songs of Life, and it features some of the most intense and plain-spoken bluegrass-gospel ever committed to tape. Satan Is Real deals in no uncertain terms with the divide between good and evil and the notion that Satan is to be feared just as much as the Lord is to be embraced. "The Christian Life," "Are You Afraid to Die" and the title cut are ardent and powerful songs written by the Louvins themselves, and even if you don't share their Christian faith, the depth and genuine belief of this music is undeniable. As a bonus, Raven has closed out this disc with four additional songs, which thankfully lighten the mood with the rock & roll-influenced "Red Hen Hop" and the swaying "Blue from Now On"; the booklet also includes the original liner notes for both LPs. Tragic Songs of Life and Satan Is Real are the two best albums of the Louvin Brothers' career (though A Tribute to the Delmore Brothers is a close third), and this disc contains nearly 80 minutes of superlative music from two of country's most iconic artists; anyone not familiar with this music ought to treat themselves to this disc at their earliest convenience. ~ Mark Deming
