Assembled from the variety of sessions recorded by the two singers between 1993 and 1995, when both found themselves at loose ends and disenchanted by the record business, Memory Palace makes for both a welcome addition to Billy Mackenzie's tragically limited canon and a fine example of Paul Haig's own magpie-like musical pursuits. The breadth of both performers' listening ranges can be heard in the end results, and if it shows that both were following and not leading trends, the songs work much more successfully than as mere pastiche. "Thunderstorm" and "Give Me Time," for instance, are pure Bristol trip-hop in feel, Portishead and Massive Attack echoing up northward, but Mackenzie's winning lead vocals are subtle magic, controlled but never less than passionate. Much of the album concentrates on smoky neo-disco crossed into house, topped with enough mysterious Euro-sheen to reward late-night listening. "Transobsession" and "Trash 3" are two Mackenzie highlights in that vein, his magical vocals as always seeming to provide that extra spark for a song. In a nice compare/contrast effort, one song appears in two guises. "Listen to Me," with Haig on lead vocals and Mackenzie on sweet backing touches, makes for a fine, gently driving guitar-meets-beats combination. "Listen Again," meanwhile, features Mackenzie's main '90s collaborator, Steven Aungle, on keyboards as Mackenzie rips into his rarely heard full-on rock & roll growl over Haig's feedback, sounding almost like what "The Witch"-era Cult could do if Ian Astbury had a greater singing range. If there's a dramatic core to the album, the semi-title track, "Stone the Memory Palace," is it, beginning with a mid-'80s Depeche Mode-styled arrangement before exploding into an industrial dance groove. The linguistically playful, whispered list of names from Mackenzie ("Egophant, Givosant, Kissonchant") makes for a great touch against the fine lead vocal, and together it all adds up as one monster of a song. ~ Ned Raggett

On their 15th go at '70s song archaeology, Rhino dishes up the decade's kaleidoscopic music menu in all its intriguing and over-the-top glory. Tapping the 1975-1976 period, the 12 cuts take in indelible novelties (C.W. McCall's 18-wheeler hit "Convoy"), '50s nostalgia (Pete Wingfield's "18 With a Bullett"), Defranco Family-issue kitsch (David Geddes' "Run Joey Run"), and glam pop (Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night"). There's also plenty of soul and funk variants, like Jigsaw's disco symphonic "Sky High," Joe Frank Hamilton's blue-eyed "Fallin' in Love," and Hot Chocolate's dancefloor-filling "Sexy Thing." The maturation of the singer/songwriter is also essayed (Janis Ian's still-solid "Seventeen"), while a country tearjerker finds its crossover legs (Jessi Colter's "I'm Not Lisa"). A few duds, a few gems, and a fair share of songs you will not need to hear a third time around. ~ Stephen Cook This might have been one trip into the past that Rhino Records should have thought about very hard before making. Oh, there are two really good moments here, Cliff Richard's sole thrust at U.S. success, "Devil Woman," and the Sanford/Townsend Band's upbeat, catchy "Smoke From a Distant Fire," but otherwise a lot of this CD is given over to records that -- unless you had a lot of good times listening to the radio while driving during the late Ford or early Carter administrations -- it's difficult to imagine anyone wanting to own this terribly much: Rick Dees' brain-damaged dance hit "Disco Duck," which did everyone the service of hammering a nail in the coffin of the disco boom in the course of becoming one ...

Something Magical
Robin Kelly Something Magical CD  (2009) (Import)

Memory Palace
CD $14.85
'Something Magical' is Robin Kelly's 4th album, recorded between January and September 2009 at Manuka Studios, Orewa, on the beautiful Hibiscus Coast North of Auckland, NZ. He is joined again by multi-instrumentalist Mike McCarthy, who has also engineered and mastered the album. Rob Galley plays acoustic guitar on 'Bare Eternity/Out There.' As the CD's themes of magic, love and whimsy closely follow Robin's writing, these are songs he will weave into his presentations. Robin writes about the - at times strained - friendship he has with the songs on Something Magical:The whole process of writing and recording 'Something Magical' has been - dare I say -magical. Some songs are brand new this year - 'Peace and Understanding' manifested itself one balmy summer's afternoon a week after we started recording. Others were old friends waiting patiently to be recognised. 'The Moment' was the third song I ever wrote. I have sung it privately to myself for over 20 years, so it would only allow me to record it with one mike, one track over two takes. Rather graciously I was allowed to add some harmonica over the chorus.'For Ever Now' was recorded as a demo (again on one track) in 2003, at the old Manuka Sounds studios. Over the past 6 years, it has repeatedly suggested to me that this simple version was enough, and resisted all my urges to redo, remix, add strings, and generally complicate the 'almost lost in the darkness' theme.'Bare Eternity' came through in 1996, and waited for a friend 'Out There' to be born 5 years later. Since then they have been inseparable.I sang the lullaby 'The Angel in Your Eye' at the launch of my first book Healing Ways in 2000 - for someone really close to me (no prizes for guessing who!) It was another song/friend that insisted that nothing should intrude on our privacy -so just one mike and ten minutes of my time. Not even a solitary squeak was permitted from my harmonica.'We All Let Go' came through a year ago, somehow as a guide through these rapidly changing times. I wondered at the time about the meaning of the line "..lost souls are counting, so don't raise your hand.." This year it really began to make sense - thanks WALGO. This song seems to connect with folk at the start of my presentations.'Something Magical' emerged out of an orange mist. A vision of a Spanish (or somewhere Latin anyway) street on a warm summer's night. Mary Magdalene is there too, either in essence or in person. Somehow this abyss is very inviting.'Keep Her Warm' connected me to a white stone cottage in Conamara, in the West of Ireland. There is the smell of a peat fire. It is the Autumn of1846, and the country is struck by famine borne of the terrible Potato Blight. A young man, newly wed, ventures out in search of work leaving behind his precious but vulnerable bride - wondering if he will ever see her again. I have sung this at a close friend's funeral, and in honour of Maori ancestors as we were welcomed onto a marae beside the Whirinaki State Forest - in this case ...
