The soundtrack for the 2005 Wes Craven/Kevin Williamson screamer Cursed begins with Bowling for Soup's good-natured take on the Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' classic "L'il Red Riding Hood." It's an appropriate remake for a contemporary werewolf film. But Bowling for Soup's version is also pretty cartoonish -- an easily to swallow concoction of high-five guitars and too-loud vocals -- and the same goes for most of the music on Cursed. Though it's referred to as the "Cursed Mix," the "Better Now" that appears here is nearly identical to the push-button INXS version on Collective Soul's 2004 LP, Youth. Smash Mouth's Steve Harwell contributes his usual eager half-rap to "You'll Never Catch Me," but the track's scratches and chunky riffs sound left over from the late-'90s crest of big beat. (Cursed's sequencing of the 1999 Apollo 440 jam "Stadium Parking Lot" directly after Harwell doesn't help.) Some of the collection's material could stand on its own. Junkie XL's "Spirits" struts with clubby energy behind Republica vocalist Saffron, and a remix of Alkaline Trio's "Fine Without You" gives it a pulsing electro-pop feel. But most of the cuts on Cursed are just genre representatives, from the glowering alt-rock of Three Days Grace and Seven Wiser to electronic background music from Crystal Method and the Dashboard Confessional soundtrack appearance that's obligatory for films in this demographic. ~ Johnny Loftus

Cursed Soundtrack songs
$13.05 What is it one can say about Grade? They seem to eclipse any classification, although it seems their music is more on the heavier side of things. While Headfirst Straight to Hell does the typical "we're not a hardcore band" thing and plays out a few hardcore songs and then throws in some mellow intro, outro, or instrumental number, Grade can still throw listeners for a loop. Singer Kyle Bishop was made to yell hardcore. There's no doubt about that. Yet, there's something sloppy but cute when he does his singing on the album. In many ways, Headfirst Straight to Hell seems almost a disappointment in light of the territory that Grade could have and should have taken. One recalls when Grade first started getting attention, after they were finished with Second Nature and it seemed that many individuals ...
| | Andrew Lloyd Webber Gold: The Definitve Hits Collection CD (2002) Remastered
Cursed Soundtrack album
$15.99 Recorded between 1969 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Paul Gambaccini.
The king of the modern musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber has achieved iconic status as a composer nonpareil. For those too overwhelmed by the prospect of disseminating his voluminous legacy via the five-disc box set NOW AND FOREVER, some career highlights have conveniently been culled for the single-disc distillation that is appropriately titled GOLD.
One is immediately struck by the perfect mating of singer and material here. Just as Michael Crawford's big, dramatic voice lends itself perfectly to the two cuts included here from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, so too does the emotional-facism subtext of EVITA's "You Must Love Me" perfectly suit self-made diva Madonna's will to power. Still, what's perhaps most striking about this collection is the fact that regardless of the decade, Webber's ...
