MORA'S MODERN SWINGTET is the small-group unit from Mora's Modern Rhythmists, one of the leading interpreters of 1920s and 1930s dance band music. Its leader, Dean Mora, is a Los Angeles-area pianist whose interest in this time period inspires him to bring the music of this era back to life, utilizing authentic original published arrangements as well as transcriptions from recordings. In 1998, responding to requests to hire a smaller version of the Modern Rhythmists, Dean formed Mora's Modern Swingtet; however, rather than merely having this new band play trimmed-down versions of the Rhythmists' musical selections, the Swingtet was given its own repertoire -- that of the famous small groups of the 1930s and 1940s: The Benny Goodman Quartet/Quintet/Sextet, Tommy Dorsey's Clambake Seven, Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, the Ellingtonians, and the John Kirby Orchestra, among others. This created an entirely new band, separate from the Modern Rhythmists, but still retaining the musicianship of the larger group. Kayre Morrison, the Rhythmists' lovely and talented singer, joins the Swingtet for renditions of such classics as "You're A Sweetheart", "Too Good To Be True", and "Moonglow".The Swingtet has performed at The Derby and Atlas nightclubs, the historic Biltmore and Argyle hotels, the Century Ballroom (Seattle, WA), the Orpheum Theatre, the Sweet and Hot Classic Jazz Festival, as well as for numerous private and corporate functions. 20th Century Closet Music Mora's Modern Swingt 20th Century Closet Songs | 1. | Jump Steady |

20th Century Closet
$18.19 Personnel: Raymond Scott (piano, celeste); Pete Pumiglio (clarinet); David Harris (tenor saxophone); Dave Wade, Russ Case (trumpet); David Harris (tenor saxophone); Lou Shoobe, Fred Whiting, Ted Harkins (bass); Johnny Williams (drums, percussion). Recorded between 1937 & 1939. Includes liner notes by Irwin Chusid. Jazz music, always known for its spirit of improvisation, was hardly the medium for composers or producers during its first 50 years. Even the greatest early arrangers -- Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Don Redman -- allowed plenty of room for solos, and would've been deserted by most of their musicians if they hadn't. All of which explains why Raymond Scott was never considered a jazz artist. His pieces, impressionistic yet rigidly composed, did use all the same components of a jazz band and exhibited close superficial similarities to Duke Ellington's early jungle band and the Benny Goodman Orchestra. The difference lay with his insistence on perfection, in his recording techniques and the members of his band. The Raymond Scott Quintette was a clean, technical, utterly precise swing machine -- the logical progression, in his mind, of the noisy jazz racket originally delivered on record by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917. Microphone Music, another Scott-related reissue by the Basta label, is a two-disc bonanza ...
