While artists often seem to randomly name their latest effort, James King has carefully aligned content with title on Bluegrass Storyteller. The music, let there be no doubt, is traditional bluegrass, harking back to Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. And the 13 songs, from "Coldest Day of Winter" to "Just as the Sun Went Down," each tell a story. Singer James King and his stories are backed by fine ensemble work by mandolinist Kevin Prater, banjoist Bernie Green, bassist Jerry McNeely, and fiddler Adam Haynes. King has borrowed songs from a number of writers, from Tom T. and Dixie Hall to Carl Jackson to Fred Eaglesmith. "Echo Mountain" tells the heartbreaking tale of a father who believes the family dog, who is covered in blood, has killed his infant son. The father shoots the dog, only to find the baby safe and two dead wolves at the backdoor. Other songs -- fathers meeting daughters they never knew they had, newlyweds meeting a bitter divorced man -- specialize at surprising and pulling the listener's heartstrings. Since this is a country/bluegrass album, the last song -- "Just as the Sun Went Down" -- is the obligatory religious number, and should please traditionalists. Bluegrass Storyteller is a fine outing with good singing, solid instrumental work, and great stories. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

At the time of TAKING THE LONG WAY's release, the lyrical content of a high-profile album by a big-deal artist hadn't been the topic of such public scrutiny since Eminem was still a hot topic. The Dixie Chicks certainly had to have seen this coming, though, after they withstood a firestorm of insults, threats, and boycotts for criticizing George W. Bush's policies. "Not Ready to Make Nice" and "Lubbock or Leave It" (among others) make it clear, however, that the Chicks have no intention of retreating a single step from their convictions. Similarly, the fact that TAKING THE LONG WAY is as much a pop album as it is contemporary country should not be misinterpreted as an abandonment of the factions that turned against the group during the controversy in question.

Inviting fans of orchestral film scores, electronic, new age and world music into the fascinating world of The Cave—as he affectionately dubs his busy home studio—the multi-faceted Eastchester, New York based composer/producer embarks on an inspiring 14-track odyssey that begins as an inner exploration but ultimately stirs imagination and transports the listener to exotic places and times. Whether experienced as a complete sonic adventure or as exciting individual short musical tales, A Story captures the vibe of the classic acoustic and electronic new age era, when Private Music, Narada and Windham Hill ran the show and some of the artists that influenced Martino’s music from that time were Patrick O’Hearn, David Lanz, Yanni—and even Tangerine Dream. Building from foundational tracks created with either a simple piano progression on his vintage 100 year old French piano or his full synth rack, he adds every fascinating texture—from orchestras and percussion to edgy electric guitars—as if channeling spirits from without and within. This is a very different process than the one he undertook for the 2006 release Golden RatioSphere, created in collaboration with Jack Pessin.
