Normally soft-spoken, Shelly Berg can be a real powerhouse when he plays piano. In the past he has shown that he could keep up with Oscar Peterson in his prime, swinging just as hard and with comparable technique while displaying his own musical personality. "Blackbird" generally has slower tempoes (with a couple exceptions) but it is just as impressive. Teamed with bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Gregg Field, Berg performs jazz standards plus the Beatles "Blackbird" (which in this version starts in seven/four time before becoming a blues), a particularly inventive rendition of Pat Metheny's "Question and Answer," Stevie Wonder's "Blame It on the Sun," Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman" (which with this treatment really sounds like a jazz piece) and two of his originals. Berg turns all of the material into swinging jazz and sounds relaxed at every tempo. Because he is based in Los Angeles and spends much of his time as an educator, Berg tends to be underrated or overlooked. Blackbird shows that he is well worth discovering for Shelly Berg is one of the finest pianists around in the early 21st century playing modern mainstream jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

There's a lot of listening going on. This is not just another recording of a pianist with accompaniment, but a unified trio." Shelly Berg Blackbird Songs Blackbird Review

| | Brian Lynch Meets Bill Charlap CD (2004)
Blackbird CD music
$13.75 The chemistry between Brian Lynch and Bill Charlap should come as no surprise to anyone who has heard their work together as members of the Phil Woods Quintet. This 2003 session features the trumpeter and the pianist with bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Joe Farnsworth. The opener is a very refreshing arrangement of the frequently recorded standard "On Green Dolphin Street"; the 7/4 time signature and Charlap's unusual vamp help it to stand out, with Lynch's muted trumpet leading the way. The leader switches to flügelhorn for a lush treatment of "Autumn Nocturne." The disguised introduction and snappy scoring of "My Heart Stood Still" bring new life to a decades-old chestnut by Rodgers & Hart. Charlie Parker's bebop blues "Cheryl" is also in great hands, opening with the tricky unison of Lynch's muted horn and Charlap's piano, followed by their terrific solos. Lynch's three originals also measure up to the standards present, which include the somewhat brisk waltz "Before the First Cup" (with Lynch on flügelhorn), the blazing bop line "On the Dot," and the snappy finale, "Blues for Gilad." Burno and Farnsworth make a superb rhythm section throughout the date. And it shouldn't be surprising that Woods' liner notes all full of praise for this top-notch CD. ~ Ken ...
| | Scott Hamilton Back In New York CD (2005)
Blackbird music CDs
$7.25 Journeyman tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton keeps things light and swinging on Back in New York. Bringing to mind a mix of Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster, Hamilton has always displayed an unerring classicist aesthetic, and this album is no exception. Featuring the deft rhythm section of pianist ...
| | Bill Charlap Plays George Gershwin: The American Soul CD (2005)
Blackbird songs
$11.05 Acclaimed pianist Bill Charlap stays in songbook mode for PLAYS GEORGE GERSHWIN: THE AMERICAN SOUL, an album that follows up his Grammy-nominated SOMEWHERE: THE SONGS OF LEONARD BERNSTEIN. Charlap clearly has a deep love for the American pop/jazz canon, and moving from the work of Bernstein to Gershwin proves to be completely natural for the tradition-minded performer.
Charlap's longtime rhythm section--bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (who are unrelated)--are on hand here, and the trio's utterly telepathic interplay makes every track sound effortless, whether ...

With its dynamic arrangements and pitch-perfect mix of pop and jazz, this album stands alongside other timeless Yuletide outings.

| | Phil Woods American Songbook CD (2006)
Blackbird CD music
$14.35 Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. His constant challenging of himself as a player, bandleader, and composer has been admirable since his debut set as a leader. While standards sets these days are not only a dime a dozen but mostly cop-outs from established artists and newcomers who either lost or never had the chops to execute them with any aesthetic imprint, let alone the one they deserve, septuagenarian Woods breathes life into ten of these tunes, and reinvents them both as harmonic structures and as tools for swing. With trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (a fine leader in his own right), bassist Steve Gilmore, and Billy Goodwin on drums, Woods takes on "Foggy Day" as if it were a new tune. The same goes for the age-old jazz ballad of choice "All the Things You Are," on which Charlap sets the course for a wondrous take with the ensemble playing together as if they co-wrote the tune. Lynch's muted trumpet is a natural choice, but Charlap's extrapolation on the chord voicings and Woods playing the middle-low register of his horn and easing out with a sense of phrasing akin to Paul Desmond's. The front-line interplay on "I've Got You Under My Skin," is simply gorgeous, especially when Woods takes his second solo break and Lynch slips back in behind the beat. One can hear the entire history of the alto as a solo instrument in this tune. And ...

| | Dinah Washington For Those In Love CD (1992)
Blackbird songs
$11.75 Recorded in New York, New York on March 15-17, 1955. Originally released as Emarcy (MG 36011). Includes liner notes by Harvey Pekar.
Dinah Washington cut a lot of sides in two decades of recording. However, her straight jazz sessions were few and far between because of the mass popular and commercial appeal that she had as a pop singer. Still, the versatile Dinah thrived in just about any setting and the one provided here in 1955 by the gifted Chicago producer Bob Shad showcases her intimate side to perfection.
Since Dinah Washington just about invented gospel-based soulful singing, it's thrilling to hear her at the peak of her powers backed by a small group that includes trumpeter Clark Terry and pianist Wynton Kelly. The session is also graced by Quincy Jones' tidy arrangements. With such expert support, the singer's powerful phrasing, precise diction, and pitch-perfect intonation draw as much emotion and meaning possible out of her chosen material, including Billie-associated ...
