Caribbean Jazz Project: Diego Urcola (trumpet, flugelhorn); Dario Eskenazi (piano); Dave Samuels (vibraphone, marimba); Oscar Stagnaro (bass instrument); Mark Walker (drums); Robert Quintero (congas, percussion). Led by vibraphone and marimba ace (and ex-Spyro Gyra member) Dave Samuels, the Caribbean Jazz Project has undergone an almost steady shift of members in its decade-long existence, but the rotation of personnel has had no effect on the group's smooth as silk approach to Latin jazz. After six studio albums, CJP finally gets to shine on a live set, recorded over three nights in March 2004 at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsman's Guild, and the lineup this time around features Samuels on vibes and marimba, Diego Urcola on trumpet and flügelhorn, Robert Quintero on conga and percussion, Mark Walker on drums, Dario Eskenazi on piano, and Oscar Stagnaro on bass. Live, the group has a little bit more step and punch to its sound, and gets to stretch past the ten-minute mark on several cuts, but nothing here will startle longtime fans. Highlights include covers of John Coltrane's "Naima," an energetic rendition of Duke Ellington's ubiquitous "Caravan," and an interesting rearrangement of Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing." ~ Steve Leggett

Here And Now: Live In Concert
$7.69 Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (vocals, trumpet); James Moody (tenor saxophone); Cecil Payne (baritone saxophone); John Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Ray Brown (upright bass); Chano Pozo (congas, bongos). RVG Legacy's 14-track Dizzy Gillespie best-of may seem unnecessary: does the world really need another Dizzy anthology? Yet there is everything to recommend the set. Boasting an excellent track selection, sharp sound, and an overview of the bop pioneer's most crucial innovations, NIGHT IN TUNISIA is as fine a choice for a crash course in bop education as any. With the rumbling, swinging title track (one of the artist's finest and most widely recognized compositions), "Anthropology," and the Latin-soaked "Cubano Bop," the set features one highlight after another. Naturally, Dizzy's trumpet beams throughout, sounding like nothing less--even all these years later--than a clarion call to new heights. Many arguments can be made as to which cuts constitute the "very best" of Dizzy Gillespie. These 14 cuts can certainly be argued for in making a solid case for the great trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. These tracks, all of which were cut for RCA between February of 1946 and July of 1949, still sound vital and progressive in the 21st century. The set kicks off with the title tune, featuring Diz with Don Byas, Milt Jackson, Al Haig, Ray Brown, J.C. Heard, and Bill DeArango. Clocking in at just over three minutes, the advanced harmonics and rhythmic invention is still startling. Thelonious Monk's "52nd Street Theme" and the Charlie Parker/Diz "Anthropology" are also included from this session. Check out DeArango's guitar solo on this last cut; it's blazing yet fluid and deeply bluesy. There are many big-band sides on this platter as well. There are three from an August 1947 session that feature James Moody, Cecil Payne, John Lewis, Jackson, Brown, and one, "Stay on It," ...
